Andy Roddick, the former World No. 1 in the ATP rankings, was one of the most powerful players to grace tennis. The American recently sat down with Johnson Wagner and Brendon de Jonge for an engaging Five Clubs podcast episode.

While the podcast tends to stick exclusively to golf, on this occasion, Roddick harked back to the days when he would watch WWE with his grandmother. Roddick also went on to talk about the importance of rivalries in sport and the one thing that makes the best rivalries memorable.

During the podcast episode, Wagner and de Jonge quizzed Roddick regarding PGA rivalries. Roddick replied, “Back in the days of WWE I used to watch it with my grandmother right before she took her teeth out for the night.”

Roddick also remembered NWO, one of the most recognizable groups in professional wrestling in the 1990s. “We would sit there and watch it and you have NWO, right? You have this villain like they’re coming into town.”

Roddick’s words must have taken fans back to the days when the American ace was involved in a fierce rivalry with Roger Federer. Roddick and Federer’s contests would feature a stark contrast in styles. On one hand, Roddick used all his power to try and overcome the Swiss maestro. On the other, Federer relied on his wits.

Ultimately, it was Federer who got the upper hand against Roddick across most of their contests. More importantly, Federer’s finesse overcame Roddick’s ferocity in 4 Grand Slam finals. However, despite Roddick’s limited success against Federer, tennis fans will forever look back on the rivalry as one of the best in professional tennis in the 2000s.
