“It’s a match that excites me”, Rafael Nadal spoke about his duel with Novak Djokovic that he will play today at the Olympic Games in Paris. This encounter will mark the legendary duo’s overall 60th career meeting. Both Djokovic and Nadal aim for Olympic gold, but their legendary rivalry and exceptional skills make their path challenging. Let’s analyze their upcoming clash and chances at the Paris Olympics.

In the opening round of the multi-sport event, Djokovic hardly broke a sweat to thrash Australia’s Matthew Ebden. He concluded the Aussie’s run in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Nadal, on the other hand, faced resistance while commencing his Olympic singles campaign. The Spaniard had a hard time navigating through Argentine Marton Fucsovics‘ formidable challenge. However, owing to his superior on-court expertise, the former World No. 1 emerged victorious with a scoreline that read 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Djokovic and Nadal crossed paths for the first time at the 2006 Roland Garros. Moreover, their last face-off was also witnessed at the clay-court event’s 2022 edition. He defeated the Serb in the quarterfinal and lifted his 14th French Open title that year. Ironically, the duo’s Olympic face-off will also be at the same venue. It only fitting that two will contest on Court Philippe Chatrier as this may account for their final dance on the professional men’s circuit. But the lingering question on everybody’s mind is, who stands a better chance at triumphing?

The 2024 season saw the comeback of Nadal to the ATP Tour. However, despite high expectations, the Spaniard only tasted modest success. His most fruitful outcome came at the recently concluded Swedish Open. He reached the ATP 250 event’s summit clash, his first finals since the 2022 French Open. That being said, Nadal will likely enjoy an upper hand playing on his favored surface, the red clay, which is the official playground for the Games.

Moreover, the 22-time major champion will also utilize another weapon in his arsenal. The match is scheduled to go down during the daytime. With this, Rafa will be served with the ideal conditions that likely prompt a noteworthy performance from his end. However, Rafa can also encounter a few struggles.

Nadal is in the midst of another potential injury setback. Although the 38-year-old stated that his physiotherapists cleared him for the contest, he is still unsure about the severity of his physical concerns. Notably, during his first-round showdown, Rafa was seen wearing a bandage on his thigh as a preventive measure. Subsequently, his rival has had his own set of injury scares this season.

At the 2024 Roland Garros, Nole sustained a right knee injury moments before his quarterfinal date. Despite facing those issues, the Serbian has seemingly rediscovered his groove. Moreover, his fitness is miles better compared to his arch-nemesis, which makes all the difference this time. For the unversed, World No. 2 Djokovic leads Nadal 30-29 in the head-t0-head. However, the Spaniard leads Nole 20-8 on clay. The Edge?

Nadal is seemingly giving the tennis world a jump scare. Either that or the Spaniard loves being generous before he surprises the French crowd with his underdog mindset. While talking to the reporters at the Olympics venue, the 38-year-old insisted that Djoko is the “clear favorite” for their upcoming blockbuster. Moreover, the Spaniard cited the reasons that drove him to this conclusion.

In his statement, the former World No. 1 drew parallels to their current situations. He notably highlighted that the Serbian star has produced noteworthy results on the ATP Tour in the past two years – a period during which Nadal was subjected to an injury hiatus and was unable to compete on the professional level. “Situations are completely different for him, for me. He’s being very competitive. I was not being very competitive for the last two years, so in that case, I think probably he is the clear favorite.”

Later, the ‘King of Clay’ voiced his initial impressions on clashing with the Serbian giant. Despite making a comeback this season and fighting to the bone to preserve his on-court dominance, Nadal seemed skeptical about his chances against Nole. However, he affirmed that he would relish the ‘winning experience’ till it lasts.

Nadal also hoped to furnish the French crowd with a laudable performance despite all odds stacked against him during the exciting match-up. “I was able in the end to find a way to win, and I’m happy about that because it gives me the opportunity to play again tomorrow, which is a match that excites me, although I’m cautious because I’m not sure at what competitive level I’ll be. But well, I’ll give it a try; I’m enjoying the experience, and winning always feels good.”

Given Nadal’s dominance on clay and the inherent advantage he holds on this surface, it’s tempting to lean towards him as the favorite. However, Djokovic is a formidable opponent on any surface and has proven time and again his ability to rise to the occasion. Ultimately, this match is a toss-up. It promises to be a thrilling battle, and the player who can maintain their composure and execute their game plan effectively is likely to emerge victorious. Who are you rooting for?
