Will Holger Rune's injury derail his promising career, or will he come back stronger?

So close yet so far! Well, that’s the summary of Holger Rune this year. His last title came on April 2023, and ever since then he has made quite a few long runs into the tournaments but failed to convert them when it mattered the most. Dropping from world number four to seventeen, the 21-year-old Dane is not having a good time. His knee injury adds more to his sorrows and, as things stand, his Olympic debut may be in jeopardy right now.

Rune’s match against France’s Arthur Fils in the QF was disrupted due to discomfort in his knee. He pulled out of the match when he was trailing 4-6, 4-1 against the Frenchman. As soon as he made this tough decision, fans were concerned about his participation in the Paris Olympics. Later, it was discovered that he also has an issue with his wrist, which is causing a major scare at the moment. Although both are troublesome, the wrist injury can cause a withdrawal.

Rune had almost qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 at 18 years old and wants to make it up in Paris. He wants to compete in the singles event but also wants to take part in mixed doubles with his compatriot, Caroline Wozniacki. Representing the nation at the Olympics is a dream come true for many athletes. Even Rune shared his excitement for the same during one of his previous interviews.

Shortly after withdrawing from the QF, Rune shared an update on his Instagram explaining that he had been dealing with a knee issue since his R1 match. “So sorry guys. My knee had caused problems since the incident in the first match. Yesterday was bad. Today I tried but it wasn’t good.” Then afterward his mother, Aneke Rune also came up with an update on his son’s injury.

Aneke is perhaps the most important person in his team. She recently came up with an update on her son’s injury. Holger Rune was supposed to have a second medical opinion on Monday. As per Aneke, who is also his manager, he is also dealing with a wrist issue which appears to be more serious.

She said, “Unfortunately, it does not look promising after the first medical opinion after the review of the scan of the wrist.” They are now waiting for two tennis-specific doctors to have a second opinion. Holger Rune is one of the three Danish tennis players in the Games, it has been a long time since Denmark won a medal in tennis. Danish fans are keeping their fingers crossed, but the situation looks grim.
