Carlos Alcaraz sacrifices millions for Spain—Is this the dedication modern athletes lack?

It has been a successful year for Carlos Alcaraz, with two Grand Slams in his bag – the French Open and Wimbledon. And now the Spaniard is at the finals of the Paris Olympics, likely to make it through the last battle for the gold. However, in between winning the majors, representing his nation, and prioritizing his health, Alcaraz has made some big sacrifices. Which could lead to a huge loss in terms of both: monetary and ranking points. Would this sacrifice culminate into a loss at the end of the year, or Alcaraz would find a way to survive it?

Tough decisions come with harsh consequences, though in the end, it all depends on the priorities of the players. When it comes to the 21-year-old Alcaraz, he has been pretty clear in establishing that he prioritizes health and fitness, over playing in fatigue. And this was particularly clear when he decided to withdraw from the Montreal Canada Masters to recover. However, the consequences he would face are as follows. Firstly, he lost 1000 ranking points, thus cutting his quota to 50% fewer points, as he also missed the Rome Masters. And what follows is losing out on the bonus pool which earned him $4.2 million last year as there are no points for Olympics.

This possibility of loss was highlighted by the tennis fan on X as they posted :

Taking a look at the current bonus pool rankings, Jannik Sinner stands at the top with 2000 points. Followed by Alexander Zverev with 1800 points, Daniil Medvedev with 1450 points, and at fourth stands Alacarz with 1400 points. The 600 points gap between Alcaraz and Sinner is not a mammoth task that cannot be recovered, as there is still the Cincinnati Masters. If Sinner is unable to win at Montreal, and Alcaraz takes the title at Cincinnati, he could still catch the million dollars and 1000 points. However, this is not the only repercussion that he would face in case he loses!

Withdrawing from Canada Masters could cost Carlos Alcaraz year end title

Losing on ranking points has far-reaching effects for Alcaraz. The moment he declared, “It has been a very long season for me, and due to the accumulation of matches and fatigue, I will not be able to play in Montreal this year.” The chances of him making it to the end year as World No.1 declined by a huge margin. If scenarios play favorable for the Italian tennis sensation, the Spaniard would need to pull up his socks for the miracle to happen.

However, there may be a way to claim the World No.1, if he wins the US Open, but the road to the victory is filled with tough competitors. But, the bonus monetary reward might escape Alcaraz if a miracle doesn’t happen. Despite the huge success that Alcaraz has had this year, Sinner leads in the race for ranking points. Furthermore, he is seen as the successor to take over the baton from the Serbian ace, Novak Djokovic. The latter was crowned with the year-end World No.1 for the 8th time.

While Alcaraz looks forward to winning the Olympic title, the cost of sacrificing for national glory is massive. However, it seems that the Spaniard is more than ready to face anything as he looks forward to Spain’s rise in the singles after 2008.
