One of the most defining moments of the 2023 tennis season was the Wimbledon Championships men’s singles final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. Against all odds, the young Spaniard stopped Djokovic’s trail of destruction and defeated him in a five-set thriller, stopping his Calendar year in its tracks. In a match full of twists and turns, Alcaraz held his nerves to win crucial points and clinch his maiden Wimbledon title. Now as he steps onto the court to defend his title there, the Spanish sensation was involved in a deep discussion with Djokovic.

While Alcaraz has already made an early exit from the big event at Queen’s Club, Djokovic will be making a comeback from an injury at Wimbledon. He sustained a meniscus tear during the French Open, due to which he had to withdraw from the tournament midway. However, Djokovic is back to training and came face-to-face with Alcaraz during a practice session.

Tennis insider, Manuel Sanchez, took to his Twitter handle to reveal a private chat between the two finalists from last year’s Wimbledon. They talked for a good few minutes and Djokovic could be heard saying, “I’m trying. I have improved quickly. Young people are beasts,” per Sanchez.

Indeed, Djokovic’s recovery from a knee injury has been magical. Despite undergoing surgery to repair the damage done, the Serb is up and running, something which has left many surprised in the tennis world. When Roger Federer sustained the same injury, he had to take a 6-month hiatus in 2016, though being Roger Federer, he did win the Australian Open upon his comeback.

But while Nole was injured at the beginning of June, where he lost his World No. 1 position to Italian Jannik Sinner, he’s already scheduled to play Wimbledon less than month later. As a result, Djokovic hilariously referred to himself as ‘young people’ as he recovered in no time and is fit to play on grass next week.

While a quick recovery from an injury has led to a big advantage for the Serbian, Alcaraz’s recent setback has also put him ahead of the Spaniard as far as Wimbledon title chances are concerned. As a result, Alcaraz was left dejected but vowed to come back stronger.

Carlos Alcaraz finds the positives among the negatives

After a thrilling French Open title victory, Alcaraz fell in the pre-quarterfinals of the Queen’s Club Championships. A good performance here would have led the French Open champ to be the top seed at Wimbledon but due to a poor run of form on grass, Alcaraz is seeded third at Wimbledon, behind  Sinner and Djokovic, who are the first and the second seeds, respectively.

Expressing his disappointment at this, Alcaraz said, “Of course it’s tough to deal with the losses, but I think it’s part of our lives. We have to (deal with it) as good as you can. After the losses, you have to take the positive things and of course the negative things just to improve to the next tournament.”

Nonetheless, the Spaniard is ‘hungry to be better’ at Wimbledon and will go out all guns blazing to defend his title. Can Alcaraz repeat his 2023 Wimbledon heroics this year? Let us know your views in the comments below.
