Is Ben Shelton the next big American tennis star, or is his sister Emma the real prodigy?

Sibling bond is always special, isn’t it? Take the example of tennis. Over the years, we have seen several sibling bonds that have etched a special place in the sport’s history. Among the famous ones are the likes of the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, and the Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike. Earlier today, Ben Shelton’s sister Emma set sibling goals with a sweet wish for her brother on his birthday.

The American sensation turned 22 today. Subsequently, Emma was among the first ones to wish Ben Shelton on his birthday. She took to her Instagram handle and shared a story, showing glimpses of adorable times that the two have spent over the years. Additionally, she wrote, “Happy 22nd birthday to a young legend.”

Indeed, Shelton is making big waves on the tennis circuit, even before he turned 22. In what was a breakthrough 2023 season for him last year, he reached the semifinals of the US Open, defeating players like Dominic Thiem and Frances Tiafoe en route. Additionally, he has gone on to win several titles on the ATP Tour. With his massive rise, Shelton has become one of the most popular players of the next generation and his sister rightly called him a ‘young legend.’

Like Shelton, his sister Emma, is also a tennis player and is making big waves on the junior circuit. She won the ITA Carolina Region Rookie of the Year title after winning the USTA Winter National Championships earlier this season. Emma Shelton is considered a naturally gifted player and could be the next big thing in the tennis world, like her brother.

After some consistent performances of late, Ben Shelton is looking to end the 2024 season with a bang. And recently, he pointed out his biggest weapon that will play a major role in his success.

Ben Shelton on his recent performances: ‘Like the way that my game is coming together’

Despite winning just a solitary title this year, the American sensation has put on consistent performances tournament after tournament. As a result, he has consolidated his position inside the top 20 of the ATP rankings. Citing his service game as the biggest reason behind his recent form, the 22-year-old revealed, “I thought I served extremely well, probably my best serving day this year. I thought I did a good job capitalizing in big moments to get my breaks.

“As a big server, if you can serve as accurately as I did today, and break once a set, you’re in a pretty good position. I like the way that my game is coming together. It’s always a big opportunity whenever you get to play one of the best two or three players in the world,” Shelton further added.

However, Shelton’s campaign in Shanghai met with an unfortunate end as he lost a close contest against Jannik Sinner in the pre-quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 Masters. Despite Shelton giving his all, Sinner was superior today, winning in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (1). Shelton will be seen in action at the Swiss Indoors in Basel next. It’ll be interesting to see if he can finish off his 2024 season on a high.
