The US Open 2020 was a moment to cherish for Dominic Thiem. He defeated Alexander Zverev in a five-setter thriller (making a comeback after losing the initial two sets) in the finals to win the title. Moreover, it was his biggest career victory after losing the Grand Slam finals on three previous occasions.

However, it hasn’t been easy-going for Thiem after his US Open victory. The Austrian has battled an inconsistent run of form and suffered from injuries. The 28-year-old suffered from foot and wrist injuries that resulted in him missing the latter half of the previous season and the start of this year.
Recently, Swiss tennis ace, Stanislas Wawrinka opened up about Thiem’s comeback to tennis.
Stanislas Wawrinka backs Dominic Thiem to come back stronger
Wawrinka is in Rome to participate at the Italian Open. During an interview, he talked about Thiem’s return from injury. Wawrinka said, “I think every injury is completely different. We all have a different mindset to come back. The reality is that it takes time. You need to accept it. You need to do the right work. He is a hard-working player. He will come back for sure. But it takes time.”

Wawrinka’s first win in 15 months
The advice Wawrinka gave Thiem makes much more sense, given his own struggles lately. The three-time Grand Slam champion has himself had to battle his injury issues over the last year. At the Italian Open, he won his first tour-level match in 15 months, defeating Reilly Opelka in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Earlier this year, Wawrinka made a comeback after suffering from a foot injury. However, he lost in the first rounds of the Challenger tournament in Marbella and the Monte Carlo Masters.
