At the mere age of 20, Carlos Alcaraz has already elevated himself to a prominent position on the men’s tour owing to his Grand Slam triumphs. While amassing 12 ATP titles, the young Spanish tennis sensation previously held the world No. 1 ranking in singles. However, things haven’t exactly gone smoothly for the 20-year-old following his Wimbledon victory, as he didn’t see any success following the grass-court season.

Further, the Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic has now overthrown Alcaraz and taken back the top spot in the men’s rankings. As he will now look to bounce back after his lackluster campaigns, a tidbit from Andre Agassi’s journey of resurgence has recently surfaced that could thrust the young Spaniard to glory at the forthcoming Nitto ATP Finals.

The Hall of Famer was recently featured in the ‘Pat McAfee Show,’ in which he was asked to shed light on his road back to prominence. Andre Agassi, who had attained world No. 1 during his illustrious tennis journey, once sank to No. 141 in 1997.

Reflecting on his adverse phase on the tour, the 8-time singles Grand Slam champion detailed his realization of what “a bad day really means.” Agassi said, “You know what a bad day really means, you know what a good day doesn’t mean when you have that Mount Everest to climb in front of you.” But with time, he came to terms with the journey.

Emphasizing the same, the American tennis legend said, “The first time around, getting the number 1 in the world, you almost could feel like it happened by accident. Although, obviously, there was a lot of work and dedication that goes into it. The second time around, when you fought the 140 in the world, you know you’re on a daily basis, knowing where you’re not.” The former tennis ace further opened up about what motivated him at that point, as he later reclaimed his No. 1 ranking in 2003.

Agassi on how he recaptured the number 1 ranking

During the conversation, the ATP legend revealed how he worked hard during that adverse period, as he was doing it for his own reasons, including his public education foundation. He said, “But I was working after that point, I ever been to the game, I was doing it for my reasons, the impact I was having on the education across the country.”

Agassi added, “The soon as I took my eyes off myself, you know, I was kinda little cleaner in my head, I was more motivated to give everything I had to it. I never thought I could be number 1 again but I know I can be better than I was today and that kinda drove me”.
