Brooke Shields and Andre Agassi had a highly out-of-control marriage. The two met in a romantic way and had a great relationship, but their married life left a lot more to desire. Shields remembered one time in their marriage when Agassi had freaked out and smashed his trophies. For the actress, it was similar to living with an alcoholic mother. Therefore, she wasn’t scared of how he acted. Further, she went into clean-up mode while sympathizing with the eight-time grand slam champion.
Shields’ role in FRIENDS was an issue for Agassi. The American tennis legend was furious at the role Shields had to play as she guest-starred in FRIENDS.

In an interview, Shields remembered talking about how it was after the two had come back home. Agassi was fuming and even went as far as smashing his grand slam trophies. However, the Pretty Baby actress had a familiar time with her mother. Therefore, instead of fear seizing her, she got to work cleaning everything up.
Shields even sympathized with Agassi over his behavior. The actress tried to replicate the trophies. She thought about their possible children wanting to see the glory days of their father. As she had the experience of living with her mother, she went into fixing mode. Additionally, Sheilds wanted to ensure that Agassi would feel comfortable with her, as he wasn’t aware of the acting world and felt threatened.
“I spent the next couple of years trying to get those trophies all replicated, um, and you know, the thought process was one day, I want our kids to see their fathers, you know, achievements like I was I, I immediately went into that fixer mode. You know, take it off of him, make it okay for him clearly, you know he wasn’t familiar with the acting world. He got threatened or whatever the justification I tried to have.”

In the same segment, Shields also talked about how she felt after everything had transpired. After she made justification for his behavior, she internalized the faults Agassi made. She also recalled getting hurt after she made everything her fault.
“It was so self-inflicted. That’s what I found really interesting. Yeah, you know, this punishment, self-punishment for what loving somebody because you let yourself feel, and that’s what happens when you give your heart away. You get hurt like there’s something in there with that. I don’t know if that’s true, um, but we don’t talk about it; I didn’t talk at all.”
