All is not going well for 35-year-old Spanish tennis star, Roberto Bautista Agut. With his compatriot Rafael Nadal missing a major chunk of this season, Agut was expected to emerge out of the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s shadow. However, he has had an inconsistent showing this year. Agut has had disappointing defeats in the early rounds of the tournaments. His best result in 2023 came earlier this year when he reached the final of the ATP 250 Adelaide 2 tournament. Recently, Agut faced an unfortunate turn of events.

The Spaniard was in Switzerland earlier this month where he played at the ATP 250 Gstaad. However, his campaign ended in the opening round when he lost to Pedro Cachin of Argentina. Further, he was set to play in Austria but a concerning event spoilt his plans.

The incident with his father took place in November 2019 when Agut was part of Spain’s team for the Davis Cup Finals. The Spaniard left the team to return home because the health of his father had drastically worsened following the accident. However, his worst fears came true as the family suffered a devastating fate.

Agut was set to defend his title in Austria

The former World Number 9 was the defending champion this year in Kitzbuhel, Austria. Last year, he defeated the local hero, Filip Misolic to clinch the title. It was a thumping victory for the Spaniard, defeating his Austrian opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. It was his second title of the season, the other one being in Doha.
