Novak Djokovic is now the most successful men’s tennis player of all time with numerous records- the most important of which is having the most grand slams to his name. He took the tennis world by storm just a few weeks back when he defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud in the final of the French Open to secure his 23rd Grand Slam title eclipsing Rafael Nadal’s tally of 22. Alex Corretja, the former world no.2 and two-time French Open finalist, has given his opinion and speculated on what might be Djokovic’s next endeavors.

Djokovic looks in scary good form, having not lost a single grand slam match this year. Alex Corretja, Andy Murray‘s ex-coach has said that Djokovic should probably give in to the motivational shift and emulate his idol Pete Sampras who won the US Open and suddenly quit tennis forever.

Novak Djokovic is the man to beat now in any tournament that he participates. He simply is invincible most of the time, and in the semifinals of the French Open, when Alcaraz had the chance to do it, he blew it away and his cramps didn’t help him either. When asked about what Djokovic might do next, Alex Corretja says that he is the firm favorite to win the next two grand slam titles of the year thus winning the calendar slam. A healthy Djokovic can win even up to 26 or even 27 says Corretja.

At the same time, Corretja said that he feels Djokovic can follow in the footsteps of his idol, the legendary Pete Sampras, who won the US Open and immediately called it a day.

Thus it will be interesting to see if Djokovic will listen to what Corretja has opined. Corretja said, “It’s always difficult to predict, he could maybe win three more but then ask himself if he needs to commit himself to winning more,” Corretja told Express Sport. “He can do the Calendar Slam this year. Why not? He’s healthy and playing well. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got to 26 or 27.”

“Sampras won 14 Majors and then won the US Open, and he took a rest. After that, he didn’t come back and we were like what? because he just won the US Open. Things can change,” he added.

However, is there anyone who can stop Djokovic from winning the Wimbledon Championship? The world no 2 tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, perhaps? Corretja happens to think otherwise.

In this year’s Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic could face Nick Kyrgios(last year’s finalist), Andrey Rublev, or Felix-Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals. Only one person seems capable of beating Djokovic at this point and that is world no.1 Carlos Alcaraz. But the match being on grass can prove to be very difficult for Alcaraz, says Corretja.

He says, “If Djokovic is healthy and doesn’t have a setback, it’s very difficult for him [Alcaraz] to win. Grass is unpredictable sometimes, you can suffer against them [grass specialists]”.  It will be interesting to see if anyone apart from Alcaraz challenges Djokovic on the surface. It is certainly going to be tough even for Alcaraz but we will have to wait and see what unfolds on tennis’ biggest stage.

With Djokovic’s form going into the tournament,  Alex Corretja’s prediction regarding Djokovic winning the calendar slam might come true. Moreover, it remains to be seen if Djokovic would take his advice and would retire suddenly as Pete Sampras did after the US Open.
