Novak Djokovic has constantly been in the news for all the wrong reasons recently. The controversy surrounding him at the US Open has overshadowed his Wimbledon triumph earlier this year. At the grass-court Grand Slam tournament, the former world number one defeated Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the summit clash to defend his Wimbledon crown.

Similar to the Australian Open this year, Djokovic will miss the US Open owing to his vaccination status. Recently, British tennis star Liam Broady took to social media to slam late withdrawals from the main draw of tournaments. Although he didn’t refer it to Novak Djokovic’s late withdrawal, the Serb’s fans slammed Broady for his comments. Subsequently, Broady clarified his statement.

The British star, whose ATP ranking is 131, failed to get a direct entry into the main draw of the US Open. He is currently playing in the qualifying rounds of the last Grand Slam tournament of the season where he is the 25th seed.
Broady’s campaign began on a positive note as he defeated local star Murphy Cassone in the first qualifying round. However, the higher-ranked Broady had to dig deep in his opening round victory. In a match lasting just over two and a half hours, Broady defeated Cassone in three sets 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1. In the next round, Broady will take on Dimitar Kuzmanov of Bulgaria.
