Holger Rune has been far from his optimum levels this season, having also dropped out of the top 5 rankings. After facing a number of initial round knockouts in hard court events, the Danish tennis star failed to make amends at the Swiss Indoors Basel. Despite making it to the latter stages of the ATP Tour 500 tournament, the former world No. 4 was thumped in straight sets in the semifinals.

In addition to yet another disappointing defeat, the 20-year-old also drew attention to his harsh criticism of the ATP authorities. And it is apparently the medical staff on the men’s tour that has infuriated the young tennis sensation.

After defeating the likes of Sebastian Baez and Miomir Kecmanović, the 20-year-old made it to the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel. The highest-ranked male Danish player was then all set up for a high-profile semifinal match against his Canadian colleague, Felix Auger Aliassime, who then defeated him, 6-3, 6-2.

Since the very start of the match, Holger Rune was struggling to settle into his rhythm, and he later went to the chair umpire to rant about what he thought was the cause of his situation. According to a report from Puntodebreak, during one of the exchanges, the Dane talked candidly about his difficulties on the court, which he attributed to the physiotherapists.

Rune said, “My legs are so tense because the physiotherapists at the ATP are not good enough to treat the players. That’s the reason. Why do you think I’m playing like sh*t? People need to know that they’re not good. There is a physio who takes 10 minutes per player. And yes, I could bring my own physio, which is what I’ll do. We play at the best level and we have high-level physios.”

Given his lackluster performance in Basel, the former world No. 4 is yet to find his best level, even after teaming up with an ATP legend, Boris Becker.

The young ATP phenomenon earlier split up with Lars Christensen and Patrick Mouratoglou, as there were allegedly some ego clashes between the two coaches. It is none other than the German tennis veteran, Boris Becker, who has now taken up the coaching duties for the 20-year-old.

Holger Rune started his campaign at the Swiss Indoors Basel under the tutelage of the six-time Grand Slam champion, who was also sighted in his player box. The Dane appeared to have gotten more momentum from the Hall of Famer’s presence as he pulled off an incredible comeback against Miomir Kecmanović in the opening match, 1-6,7-5, 6-3.
