Federer skipping Wimbledon for Murray's last dance—Is this the ultimate show of respect?

Roger Federer‘s connection with grass is for eternity. Although the legend cannot walk into the competition once again, he can still relive the memories by finding a place in the royal box. It’s day 4 of Wimbledon 2024 and the Swiss tennis maestro is already there at the Wimbledon village. While a majority of the predictions said that he was there to root for Novak Djokovic, his absence during the Serb’s match makes the agenda uncertain.

What could be more engaging than Novak Djokovic’s showdown at Wimbledon? Roger Federer’s entry into the arena is the perfect answer. The whole crowd present in the arena was distracted for a moment as the Swiss tennis maestro made a grand entrance at Wimbledon. Dressed in an elegant grey suit, the legend walked and all his die-hard fans could remember were the good old days when he ruled these grass courts. Despite being in the arena at the same time when Djokovic played, Federer did not attend his former on-court rival’s match.

The Serb faced Jacob Fearnley today and therefore secured a massive win with a final scoreline of 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. This was his second match since his knee surgery, which raised doubts about his presence in the event. Federer’s absence at Djokovic’s match suggests that he might be saving his schedule for Andy Murray‘s match.

The Briton is looking forward to exploring his last campaign at Wimbledon. Although he was originally scheduled for men’s singles on Tuesday, the two-time champion had to withdraw due to a back injury. Therefore, his men’s doubles run with his brother Jamie against John Peers and Rinky Hijikata on Center Court remains the major focus.

Roger Federer’s entry in the arena comes just hours after Mirka Federer was seen watching the all-Italian clash between Jannik Sinner and Matteo Berrettini with one of her twin daughters, who was sporting an ‘RF’ cap. While many wished to see the tennis legend as well, he decided to be their genie and granted the wish soon enough. Along with the fans, there was one more reason for him to be there.

There could be multiple reasons behind Roger Federer’s valuable presence at Wimbledon. While being there for Andy Murray as a gesture of mutual respect is one thing, fulfilling the demands of his kids is another. Just a few days ago, fans received an opportunity to relive the last few days of the Swiss tennis maestro on tour.

During the screening, his kids expressed an urge to experience the glorious setup this year. “I’m making plans, kids are pushing me there… I’m happy at home but the kids said ‘No we wanna come to Wimbledon this year, you were [there] last year without us!’, so, hey, then we go to Wimbledon,” he said.

Along with that, his absence at Novak Djokovic’s match is also justified somehow. “Most likely I’ll be there, I don’t know if we’re gonna watch any matches but I’ll be in the Wimbledon village, so try to spot me there,” the eight-time champion added. Federer’s plan during his presence isn’t clear yet. While it could be a possibility that he finds time to honor Andy Murray, all the fans could do is wait.
