Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz’s first-round opponent is quite confident about his match-up. The Spaniard is focused on his preparations for the grass-court major after losing to Jack Draper in the R16 in Queen’s Club Championships. As his title defense was hindered, another rival seems to be ready to give him an early exit for another title defense.

After the recent release of Wimbledon draws, discussions amongst tennis fans have not stopped. Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz is scheduled to start his title defense journey against Estonia’s Mark Lajal on the 1st of July. As the US Open’s Instagram handle released his road to the final, one fan wrote, “What road to the final? First round exit, byebye.”

While the post was merely a reaction from a fan, it became more than just that, as Lajal himself shared the fierce reaction in his Instagram story. The Estonian ranked 191 has confidence in himself after beating three qualifiers.

Mark Lajal will make his grass-court major debut 2024 Wimbledon tournament. His recent performance includes reaching the doubles semifinals with compatriot Alexei Popyrin at an ATP Challenger grass tournament in Surbiton, Great Britain. This could be the reason behind Lajal’s confidence as he prepares to face the defending champion.

However, Carlos Alcaraz cannot be easily bothered with such remarks. The third seed remains confident about his potential on the surface despite the predictions. “I have more matches in my bank on grass, and with the great run I had last year at Queen’s Club and Wimbledon, I know a bit about how to play and understand the game on grass,” he said in a recent interview, amid the anticipation of the event.

If Alcaraz manages to surpass the challenge against Lajal, he will have several other hurdles to overcome. The Spaniard might meet Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the fourth round. Moving ahead, he could face eighth seed Casper Ruud or Queen’s champion Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals. Soon after that, a potential semifinal match against top seed Jannik Sinner poses a major challenge. Alcaraz seems to be determined to defend his title, so why not? He has many big reasons to do so.

Major milestones await Carlos Alcaraz entry at Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz’s recent victory at Roland Garros helped him smash a record of being the youngest player to secure a slam on each surface. As he plans his entry in Wimbledon, historical targets are set and waiting to be shot. Winning the grass-court major title soon after the French Open victory is something that only 5 legends have achieved in their careers so far.

The feat, known as the “channel slam,” is a major opportunity for Carlos Alcaraz. If he achieves it, he can stand in line with the likes of Bjorn Borg, Rod Laver, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Defending a grand slam title, especially Wimbledon, is more difficult than one can imagine. 8 players have achieved it in their careers. If Alcaraz somehow managed to attain this win, it would not only add another title to his list but would also etch his name with the tennis legends.
