The Wimbledon Championship is one of the biggest tournaments of the year. The organizers wanted to expand their area in a project that would cost approximately $250 million. They made a bid to the city council in order to expand the stadium. But their humongous bid was rejected, and the members of the championship were left despondent.

The news read, “NEW: Wimbledon organizers dealt a blow in their bid for a £200m ($250m) expansion of the All England Club. Wandsworth Council *reject* their planning application seven votes to none, following the advice of their planning officers. Not the end of this process.” And with this, the dreams of the tournament organizers were shattered.

The news was shared by James Gray, a news correspondent at I Paper Sport. He also shared the comments made by Sally Bolton, the CEO of Wimbledon. Sally Bolton expressed her disappointment after the bid was denied. She highlighted the benefits of the expansion to sway the decision in her favor.

We firmly believe the AELTC Wimbledon Park Project offers significant social, economic and environmental improvements, including 23 acres of previously private land into a new public park, alongside hundreds of jobs and millions of pounds in economic benefits for our neighbors in Wandsworth, Merton and across London.”

Bolton further said that the council in Merton was split, which did not help their decision. Now, their planning application will be shared with the Mayor of London’s office.
