Rafael Nadal, one of the most decorated players in tennis, is possibly playing the final season of his illustrious career. As he navigates this emotional and pivotal time, there’s one prize that stands out in his sights: another Olympic medal. To chase this dream, the Spanish tennis legend has made some tough decisions, including the significant choice to opt out of the Grass-court Grand Slam, Wimbledon. This, however, is not the first time Rafa has made a Wimbledon withdrawal call!

Soon after his first-round defeat at Roland Garros, against Alexander Zverev, Nadal raised doubts over his participation at the Grass Slam. Transitioning from clay to grass and then returning to clay for the Olympics wouldn’t be a smart move, but before 2024, Rafael Nadal had opted out from the tournament 5 times in his career!

The first time Rafa had to withdraw from the championship was during the initial days of his career, in 2004. The then 17-year-old Spaniard suffered a stress fracture in his left ankle in the Estoril Open while playing against Richard Gasquet. This forced Nadal to take a break from the game for three months, and he was compelled to miss the tournament. Injury continued to trouble the tennis legend in 2009 as well.

Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in Wimbledon 2008 in one of the most comprehensive matches in tennis history. However, he could not defend his title in the following year due to tendinitis. Nadal had suffered this problem in both knees since he was 21. The pain escalated in 2009 and forced him to withdraw from the tournament, which according to a leading coach back then, was a ‘painful decision.’ “It’s bad enough for him not to play and defend the title. It must be very, very hurtful, besides the pain in the knees,” Sven Groeneveld had said back then.

Rafa continued his tryst with injuries in 2016 as he withdrew from the third round of Roland Garros, then eventually Wimbledon, as doctors prescribed immobilization of his left hand for a prolonged time.

Four years later in 2020, a left foot injury beleaguered him as he decided to not participate in the Grand Slam to “prolong his career.” It’s never an easy decision to take but after listening to my body and discuss(ing) it with my team I understand that it is the right decision.

As the ‘King of Clay’ started to ponder upon his career in 2023, he was faced with yet another setback. During his venture at the Australian Open last year, where he faced an early exit, he picked up hip flexor. This compelled Rafa to undergo surgery and miss all the other Grand Slam events, including Wimbledon.

The Spaniard has announced his participation at the event in Bastad. Scheduled to be played just after Wimbledon week, the event will feature Rafa as a major highlight. This move is also seen as an attempt by Nadal to get a grasp of the clay court once again, where he failed miserably at the French Open 2024.

Will the King win at the Olympics? Only time will tell. But the tournament will surely be one of the best for Rafael Nadal as fans await him with palpable anticipation.
