It has been a tough year for the American Taylor Fritz. The World No. 13 has been stuck at the quarterfinal exit in many tournaments, including the Australian Open, Italian Open, and as recently as Queen’s Club, among others. Only gracing the finals of two tournaments, the Delray Beach Open and the Bavarian International, winning the former and losing the latter. After such a topsy-turvy journey, Fritz is certainly hoping to turn things around at the Grass courts of Wimbledon.

The American may not be able to produce his best tennis right now, but his consistent journey throughout the year may come to his aid to break the quarterfinal loop. Though the start would be a quick and smooth one if the previous stats are to be believed, he would face Christopher O’Connell in the first round. In their only previous encounter, Fritz emerged victorious and would love to continue his streak further.

After getting through the initial challenge, he would face either of the two, Kei Nishikori or Arthur Rinderknech. The Japanese Nishikori has dominated their H2H record with 3-1, however, in their latest encounter back in 2023, Fritz brushed his threat aside. Whether he would be able to do it again this year or not would define his trajectory on the grass. But he may avoid the Japanese and face Rinderknech in the 2nd round, which might lead to a relatively easy journey, as he overpowered him in their only encounter.

Though in R3, he may face either of the three- Daniel Evans Alejandro Tabilo, and Flavio Cobolli. And Evans could be a threat to Fritz as he leads in their H2H encounter(1-2), winning last 2 of the 3. But that was in 2022, and Fritz would be eager to settle the scores. While Tabilio (2-0) and Cobolli, may not pose a still challenge to the American. As in their 2 encounters one back in 2022, and the latest in 2024,  Tabilio was defeated, and Cobolli is yet to face Fritz. Hence, Fritz’s extensive experience might aid his escape the challenge posed by either of the players.

However, R4 might be the testing ground for him as he may face seasoned players- Jack Draper or Alexander Zverev. Tackling either of them would not be easy for America. Zverev has been a terrific performer in the last few tournaments, despite other battles to distract him. The French Open runner-up would be the real test of the time for Fritz, as not only did he lead their H2H with 3-5, but he won their last encounter in 2023 at Rome. While Draper and Fritz have been even, winning one encounter each, the former tennis player has been grabbing headlines now and then for his performance. Whosoever he faces in R4, Fritz would need to be at his 100% to salvage his chances to continue to campaign.

Given his strong desire to break into the semifinals after conquering the quarter, Fritz would have to get past either of these players- Stefanos Tsitsipas or Lorenzo Musetti. Fritz would be relatively more confident playing Tsitsipas, as he has defeated the Greek in their last 2 encounters with the last one in 2024, at the Australian Open, taking his H2H record to 2-3 in Tsitsipas’ favor. Whereas Musetti falls back in the H2H count, he defeated Fritz in their latest clash at the Mate-Carlo Masters in 2024.

Would he be able to defeat his quarterfinal opponent or not, only time will tell. But his spirit to stay at the top would certainly come in handy during these tough Grass battles!

Taylor Fritz reclaims American throne before the start of Wimbledon Championships

Fritz has been at the helm since 2021, however, recently Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul have been vying for the American glory, while Fritz tries to maintain his position. And after losing the crown to Shelton in April 2024, and Paul a few weeks back, Fritz snatched back his position from both.

Such ranking may not aid him in beating his opponents, but it would be a good morale boost for the American as he gears up to take every challenge head-on. Would Taylor Fritz claim his first Grass Grand Slam defeating the celebrated lineup? A question every American is looking for an answer to!
