Djokovic's son using Federer's racquet—Is this a sign of respect or just a smart choice?

“It’s not about holding on to the secrets forever, but passing on the legacy to the upcoming generation!” And Novak Djokovic isn’t the only one who is making the most of his available time on the grass to pass on some lessons to his son Stefan with Roger Federer’s brand. He joins Maria Sharapova, and Ashleigh Barty, who returned to the grass Slam with their kids, as they share their indelible legacy with their toddlers.

Djokovic is all set to begin his 2nd round match with the British player, Jacob Fearnley. However, before the match, the World No.2 has thoroughly warmed up, with his son Stefan. In the endearing father-son moment shared by the Wimbledon’s official X handle, Stefan can be seen warming up side by side with his dad. Before joining him on the grass court to practice a few hits. However, the silver lining to this moment was the racquet used by his son. Stefan was seen holding Roger Federer’s Wilson brand racquet to help his father with a few hits!

This small gesture spoke a thousand words. Stefan not only helped his father to get ready for his upcoming clash. But the 24-time Grand Slam champion also had the opportunity to teach Stefan the way of the grass-court early on. Only a few may get a chance to learn from the champion of the game himself, on the surface he dominated for years. Though it is unclear whether Djokovic’s son will take up tennis in the future, if he does, he will have the support one of the best in the game. While other players study Djokovic’s game to over power him on the court.

It seems the legends are either coming back to relive the memories and share them with their toddlers. Or creating them on the court for the kids to remember. While Djokovic falls in the latter category, Sharapova and Barty take the former. The Russian tennis legend, Sharapova, was seen sharing her legacy with her toddler son as she pointed out her win over Serena Williams back in 2004. While Barty stood on the rails, giving her son a wholesome view of the court that she conquered!

Though Djokovic certainly takes the cake as he raises hopes of tennis fans with regards to his son following in his footsteps shortly!

Have an interesting take?

It’s not just this Grass Slam championship that Djokovic is seen warming up with Stefan at Wimbledon. Last year too before his first round, the then-8-year-old was seen accompanying his father for a few warmup hits. And back in 2022, at Turin, Stefan joined Djokovic again for practice, before the finals. These frequent appearances with his father on various courts certainly give the impression of Djokovic Jr. getting a taste of all the courts before he enters the professional circuit.

Moreover, in March this year, Stefan was seen hitting the gym with his father at Indian Wells. It seems Djokovic is readying the future of Serbian tennis, as he simultaneously raises the bar for the generation of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz to conquer his legacy. However, it would be a magical moment for the tennis circuit to watch Djokovic’s son emulate his father on the circuit, which he once ruled!
