Is Stefan's doubt a reflection of the pressure Djokovic faces in breaking Federer's record?

“He(Novak Djokovic) inspired me to be persistent and to play tennis well,” Stefan Djokovic once said in an adorable essay dedicated to his father. This trait seems to have been inherited as Djokovic Sr. continues his relentless pursuit of Wimbledon glory. With another semifinal appearance secured, the question on everyone’s lips is whether he can match Federer’s record of eight titles. Perhaps the youngest Djokovic has an inkling.

Djokovic’s opponent, Alex De Minaur, retired before the QFs match due to his hip injury, giving the 37-year-old player a welcome walkover to the semis. Therefore, the seven-time Wimbledon champion is now vying to reach the final once again, like last year! However, he still has Lorenzo Musetti to overpower in his next match. As the tension rises, the host of the Tennis Channel interview (included in the TC Live podcast) asked Djokovic’s children Stefan and Tara about their opinions on “Who is gonna win Wimbledon?”

Replying to the question, his six-year-old daughter, Tara, had an optimistic answer. “He(Djpkovic) is!” she exclaimed. However, on the contrary, his nine-year-old son was not so sure. Adding a hilarious response, Stefan said, “You never know.” The hosts, along with Djokovic himself, shared a good laugh at that ambiguous response. Upon further pressing, Stefan remained firm in his opinion. “Yeah, a really, really good chance but you never know maybe other players are also gonna have a chance to win.”

Maybe he does not want to add more pressure to his father, who has yet to win a title this season. Instead, the former World No. 1’s son wants to keep an open mind. Either way, his support for his father is apparent even from the stands, along with that of his mother and little sister. Sometimes, the camera even catches him imitating his father’s shots during a match! Besides, both spent some quality time together off the court as well. Before his second round match at Wimbledon, Djokovic’s son was keen on helping his father warm up with a medicine ball.

Apart from that, the No. 2 seed also practiced with his son, hitting balls with him at Aorangi Park there. Obeying his father’s instructions to “knees down,” “hit a few slices,” Stefan was there by his father’s side all along. On the other hand, Djokovic, who often shares his regrets about missing his family during a tour, also had the time of his life with his children in London! After all, Novak Djokovic knows that, whether he wins the tournament or not, he is already his son’s “superhero.”

A couple of years ago, a video of Djokovic and his son practicing on the grass courts of Wimbledon went viral on social media. A similar scenario unfolded this year as well. Hence, the lingering question in everyone’s mind is whether little Stefan’s beloved tennis playground is none other than the iconic Wimbledon. Djokovic once answered that question, “For him, anyone playing in Wimbledon is a superhero.”

“It’s always special for me the feeling to play in front of my son. I didn’t have too many opportunities in my life to have that kind of sensation and experience. It’s always very unique,” Djokovic further added. Not only playing in front of him, Djokovic has already taken on the role of teaching him tennis whenever he gets time. “I try to use every available opportunity… to play with him because he’s right now fully immersed into tennis,” Djokovic said a couple of years ago.

Novak Djokovic’s victory at Wimbledon might be uncertain. But either way, we want to see more of the father-son duo on and off the court at Wimbledon!
