Djokovic's outburst at Wimbledon: A champion's passion or a sign of cracking under pressure?

Even before the start of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, there was a big question mark on the unpredictable climatic conditions here. On one hand, there were sunny and humid conditions while on the other, heavy rains have welcomed the players. Serbian tennis legend, Novak Djokovic, became a victim of this unpredictability in his second-round match against local player, Jacob Fearnley.

During the third set, the wind speed at the Centre Court became agonizingly high due to which Djokovic found shot-making difficult. This affected his accuracy and he went on to lose that set 7-5. Subsequently, the Serb lost his cool and went on to shout in front of his wife and children, who were seated in his box.

Fearnley, the 22-year-old wildcard entrant, made full use of his home conditions against Djokovic, who was visibly struggling with his shots in the third set. While many may have predicted an easy win for the Serb, it wasn’t meant to be as massive winds gushed the Centre Court. Subsequently, he came under the scanner as he vented out his frustration toward his wife, Jelena, and his kids present in the stadium. However, they kept on encouraging the Serb and vouched for him to come back stronger as Djokovic eventually went on to win the match in four sets 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5.

Along with the unpredictable conditions, Djokovic also felt some discomfort in his knee. He pulled up his knee several times during the match after serving and after moving to the right. As a result, question marks further erupted as to how much he had recovered from his surgery. After the match, he gave an account of his recovery after undergoing surgery.

Worrying signs for Novak Djokovic?

The Serb suffered from a knee injury during his French Open campaign due to which he had to withdraw from the tournament midway. Despite undergoing surgery for a meniscus tear, Djokovic made a surprisingly quick recovery to participate in the Wimbledon Championships. However, he was seen feeling some discomfort again in his knee during his second-round win over Fearnley.

After the match, Djokovic was asked if that injury had resurfaced again and how his knee was feeling. Replying to this, the 24-time Grand Slam champion said, “I was feeling ok. Feeling alright. Don’t wanna be looking for any excuses of the performance today. Credit to Jacob. On my side, I should’ve done things better in the 3rd when I was a break up. Very swirly conditions today.. physically I felt well. Can I be playing better and moving better? Absolutely. I hope as the tournament progresses I’ll be feeling better each day.”
