Tennis runs in the Shelton blood! As American tennis star Ben Shelton achieves his best result at the Wimbledon Championships, he has improved upon his performance from 2023. Now, he aims to do even better, with his father as his goal. After his victory, Shelton remembers the time his father, Bryan Shelton, ran amok on the grass of London.
Can Ben recreate and go beyond Bryan’s achievements at Wimbledon? Only time will tell. The 58-year-old American former college tennis coach and former pro tennis player’s career spanned from 1989 to 1997. He attained a career-high ranking of 55 and also won two singles titles. His most memorable moment was playing against Boris Becker twice at this historic grass-court tournament (1989, 1992). He lost both of those matches against the German legend, but he has fond memories of clinching victories against other Hall of Famers.
He defeated the former world number 2 and 1991 Wimbledon champion, Michael Stich, in the first round of 1994 Wimbledon. His best result in Wimbledon was reaching the R4 in the same year. Sitting down with Tennis Channel after his victory against Lloyd Harris, Ben shared what his father has told him about his journey, “I think one of the funniest is I think that the court he bet Stich on is called the graveyard, and they got rid of it? Yeah, so that was one of the funniest moments for him, but I think it’s one of the coolest places that he gets to come back, you know, being in the final 8 club.“

Shelton Jr. further revealed how Shelton Sr. is enjoying his time here as a coach. “He says to me all the time like, you know, I didn’t think that I’d be back here as a coach, you know, at his point in my life.” So, everyone in the Shelton family is enjoying these moments and looking forward to having more exciting times at the SW19.

Talking about ups and downs, well Bryan Shelton witnessed it all together in the same. The downward side of the story was his defeat in the match against Boris Becker. However, the good side of that match was, “I just remember my mom being there for this. Growing up, as kids Wimbledon was everything to us. For her to able to come over and watch me play Boris Becker at Wimbledon, my first year on tour,” said Bryan Shelton in an interview.
While not a history of a champion, Bryan has had a glorious history with Wimbledon. Ben Shelton will be looking to go beyond what his father achieved and give the Shelton name a more solid effect in the grass slam.
