Carlos Alcaraz is ready to enter the 2024 Wimbledon riding high, ready to hit the ground running. Last year, the Spanish tennis player ended the Grand Slam event with a victory over Novak Djokovic. But this year, ahead of the event, the three-time Grand Slam champion talked about the next generation taking over, with a sarcastic statement over the Serb.

When the men’s draw began proceedings Friday at Wimbledon, reigning champion Alcaraz landed in the same half as world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. In a recent video shared by Wimbledon, the former world’s number-one talked about his upcoming Wimbledon participation and, dwelling on the rising players while adding Novak Djokovic to the mix.

When asked about what he thinks about the upcoming generation achieving victories in various Grand Slam events. He stated, “Of course, I’m happy to be part of this change of generation, of course, Novak is still there, still like he’s 25 years old something unbelievable. The next generation is, you know, getting better let’s say and I’m really happy to be part of it.”

However, Alcaraz has admitted that his rival for the top rank, Djokovic, is far superior on indoor courts, making an honest admission last year. He stated, “He plays the same level during the whole match. The shot quality he has is unbelievable. He plays really, really deep. It’s really difficult to take advantage from that. Once again, he has shown why he’s the best player in the world.”

Having suffered a painful defeat to the Spaniard in the Wimbledon final in July, Djokovic sought atonement with a win over Alcaraz in the Nitto ATP Finals quarterfinals. Apparently, at the same time, while last year, Alcaraz faced the world number one at that time, this year he might face the current number one, Jannik Sinner, in the event.

Both of them have landed in the same half of the Wimbledon draw, with the pair seeded to meet in the semi-finals. In order to win the title earlier this month, Alcaraz, who defeated Novak Djokovic in five sets in the Wimbledon final last year, will play Sinner in the Roland Garros semifinals.

In their ATP Head2Head series, the 21-year-old Spaniard is presently leading the 22-year-old Italian 5-4. However,  it will be interesting to see what comes next for the Spaniard to keep his Wimbledon title for the next consecutive year.
