World No.7 Matteo Berrettini didn’t enjoy an ideal start to the ATP Finals 2021. The Italian player lost the first set in close tie-breaker against Alexander Zverev and injured his left oblique during the second set. The injury was quite bad and Matteo Berrettini had to retire in the middle of the match. As a result, Alexander Zverev got a walkover.
Matteo was absolutely gutted, as he was ecstatic about competing in front of a home crowd in Turin, Italy. Will he play a further part in the ATP Finals?

Matteo Berrettini might miss his second round-robin match at the ATP Finals 2021
After this, Berrettini was scheduled to play against Hubert Hurkacz in the second round-robin match at the ATP Finals 2021. However, there are high chances that he will not be able to feature in the match because of his recent injury. The match is scheduled to take place tomorrow.
After his injury, Berrettini will undergo some scans and then decide if he is fit enough to play on Tuesday or not. Under such circumstances, it will be really tough for the World No.7 to come back to the court. He even mentioned that the match against Zverev was one of the worst days of his career in a recent interview.
“This is probably the worst day I’ve ever had in my tennis career,” said Berrettini.

“Not being able to finish the match is killing me”- Berrettini
In the post-match interview, Berrettini claimed that it was one of the best atmosphere that he had witnessed in his career during the match against Zverev. Thus, he stated that he is feeling really bad about not finishing the match.

“The atmosphere was one of the best I ever felt in my life. It was unbelievable. That is probably why I feel so bad right now. Not being able to finish the match is killing me. It is just really tough to face. I really wanted to enjoy every second, that’s what we said as a team. The worst thing that could have happened, happened,” explained the Italian.
Matteo Berrettini has a lot of crowd support since the ATP Finals 2021 are taking place in Turin, Italy this year. Thus, it will be intriguing to watch if somehow manages to make a comeback and play in his remaining matches there. If he isn’t able to compete, fellow Italian Jannik Sinner, who is the alternate, will come in and participate.
