With Roger Federer‘s retirement and Rafael Nadal‘s injury woes, Novak Djokovic is the only one part of the ‘Big 3,’ making strides on the tour. Even in his late 30s, the Serbian tennis legend is breaking a number of records with his remarkable on-court prowess. With a total of 24 Grand Slam titles under his name, the 36-year-old now holds the record for most major trophies won on the ATP Tour. On top of winning three major titles this season, the ‘Djoker’ has further reclaimed the number one ranking in singles owing to his phenomenal season.
Given his illustrious legacy, the 24-time singles Grand Slam champion has arguably reigned supreme for a considerable period. But as they say, eras come to an end, and Djokovic’s dominance over the past several seasons is hardly an anomaly. The ‘Djokovic’ era might be coming to an end with the huge possibility of the formation of a new ‘Big 3′ on the men’s tour.

There are three youngsters on the men’s circuit who have garnered a lot of attention this season owing to their on-court exploits. Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune have quickly established themselves as the leading figures by outclassing some of the big guns, including the ATP legend, Novak Djokovic.
The Spaniard previously stunned the entire tennis realm by overcoming the Serb, who has been a force to be reckoned with on the grass, in the championship match of Wimbledon. Aside from their grass-court encounter, Alcaraz has also defeated the ‘Djoker’ on clay during their confrontation at the 2022 Madrid Open. Further, the 20-year-old, who previously held the number one ranking, is one of the few players who is currently tied with the 24-time singles Grand Slam champion in their H2H record, 2-2.

Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, has also managed to prevail in his matchup against the current world No. 1 player. During one of the most prestigious tournaments of the men’s tour, the Italian tennis star pulled off an upset by defeating the Serb in a three-set group match of the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. The 22-year-old, who has also attained the world No. 4 ranking, is getting lauded by the tennis community after his recent victory while being deemed a part of the new ‘Big 3’.

Just like Sinner and Alcaraz, another young tennis sensation, Holger Rune is also among the few players who have managed to clinch a couple of victories against Djokovic. The Dane’s first win against the Serb came at the 2022 Paris Masters when he came out on top in a three-set blockbuster finale, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. For the tennis community, it was one of those rare moments when Djokovic was taken aback by the 20-year-old who lifted the trophy in Paris. Even in their very next meeting at this season’s Internazionali BNL d’Italia, the 36-year-old was once again stunned by the young tennis phenomenon, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Given Alcaraz, Sinner, and Rune’s immense success at such a young age, it is clear that the next generation has arrived and is gradually taking charge of the ATP Tour. Djokovic, on the other hand, is a legendary figure; however, age catches up with even the greatest of athletes. Considering the same, it will be quite challenging for the Serb, who is in his late 30s, to emulate his past exploits on the court.
Players of high caliber, like the 2-time singles Grand Slam champion, Alcaraz, will pose a serious challenge to the current world No. 1 player as they will be vying for more glory. Hence, these next-generation stars are arguably touted to establish a new ‘Big 3’ in the upcoming seasons as they gain more experience on the court.
