Last year, Federer was exploring the possibility of retiring at this very tournament. However, he eventually called time on his career at the Laver Cup, as emotions got the better of him. Talking about the same in a recent interview with the BZ Basel, he said, “I don’t think I would be able to do it emotionally. The more I think back to when I was a ballboy, to 2019 when I won my last tournament, the more I feel like it was already a fairy tale.”

As a result, Federer kept the option of making a surprise visit to Basel open after his retirement at the Laver Cup. Although it is still uncertain, there is a possibility that the Swiss maestro will appear at the tournament this year.

While Federer was deciding on his retirement venue, he once revealed how he chose the Laver Cup as his final tournament. It was an emotional moment for the Swiss maestro, as fellow players like Rafael Nadal were also reduced to tears.

As the Swiss maestro bid adieu to the sport last year, an important question lay in front of him before his retirement. It was about where to retire.

Talking about it, he said, “And then it was a question of where do I retire? You know, is it the US Open? Is it in Basel? Or was it going to be at the Laver Cup? etcetera. And then it ended up being the Laver Cup, which was absolutely fantastic at the 02 Arena. What a moment. I’m happy it went the way it did because I was always dreading the moment, you know, of how do you announce your retirement?”
