The Australian Open holds immense hope as tennis fans await the most anticipated comebacks. The ATP circuit is full of new energy and upcoming players with their ebbs and flows. It has been nearly two years since fans witnessed a clash between two legends. Though Carlos Alcaraz is sharpening his skills with every math, he is nowhere close to the legacy of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Federer has hung his racket and hopes to become a full-time businessperson. Rafael Nadal has also planned his retirement, but only after acquiring what belongs to him. Rafa won his 22nd Slam at the Australian Open in 2022 but lost to an unseeded Mackenzie McDonald in this year’s Melbourne Slam.

He has been on hiatus since that match due to a left hip injury that troubled him for more than 6 months. The Spaniard resumed his practice in August and hoped to return in 2024. Australian Open director dropped a bombshell update on Rafa’s return out of the blue, and the world is bubbling with excitement.

When Rafael Nadal announced his interim break, fans hoped to watch him on the surface he owned. But the severity of his injury kept him away from the French Open. Nadal has been in the circuit for more than two decades. The 2023 break was the longest in his career since the Spaniard could not even witness a match live.

It is as excruciating for Rafa as it is for fans not to participate in competitive tennis. So, he has been trying to return from day 1, and after days of speculations, the official confirmation felt like a warm hug to the tennis fraternity. Australian Open director Craig Tiley announced on live TV that Rafa personally confirmed his comeback at the Melbourne Slam with him.

Tiley said, “We can announce exclusively here that Rafa will be back. He has been off for most of the year. I’m talking to him over the last few days, he confirmed that he will be back. We are really excited about that.” Elaborating on Rafa’s return, Tiley added, “He was the champion of 2022. Then, of course, he has been in training to wanting to return as well.”

The Australian Open director also disclosed that he stays in constant touch with the 22-time Grand Slam champion. While revealing his thoughts, Tiley spilled beans on why Rafa risked almost a year of his career to return. The Melbourn Slam will also witness former top seeds aiming to accelerate their career.

During the Australian Open launch in Melbourne, Tiley described, “He’s (Rafa) not going to come into the event unless he thinks he can win it. He’s not going to just show up to play, he’s going to show up to win.” The Aussie Slam director assured, “He particularly is someone who loves Australia. So far the early signs have been really good”, as compiled by Channel Nine.
