The 2018 US Open final was one of the most anticipated ones. Serena Williams faced Naomi Osaka and had the chance to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles. However, Osaka won and dashed the dreams of Williams. But, the event that took the cake was the outburst of Williams after she was given a warning for being coached. After the match, the audience was heavily divided on the issue. Some claimed that the umpire was at fault and some claimed that Williams acted childishly. TV show host Trevor Noah, on the other hand, has a different way of going about it.

The final was highly dramatic as the Queen of the Court lost after being penalized a game point in the second set. Williams lost the final and Osaka lifted the trophy. But the chaos had just begun as the discussion would take point in every news outlet.

During an ad-break on The Daily Show, Noah went on to discuss what happened during the match. Noah first gave the details of what transpired, including Williams breaking a racquet and being docked a point. Further, he also talked about the no-coaching rule being weird. He also said that the commentary is different when it comes to men’s and women’s divisions.

Going forth, he also talked about the sexism that was still pervasive in the sport to this day. He said, “Even in tennis, even at that level of a sport, you still see a discrepancy with how a man and a woman are treated in the same environment, in the same work environment, you know?”

As per him, Williams being penalized was not the issue. Rather, men should be punished the same way as her.

“Now I’m not saying that Serena shouldn’t be punished. I’m saying it the other way around. I’m saying, like, now the focus is on the guy where it’s like, why aren’t they being punished? Do you know what I mean? Why aren’t they being called out on these things? Why aren’t they? Because it’s gotta be equal one way or the other. Either everyone fights or everyone gets punished.”

When male players had outbursts

In 2018, several other players had outbursts of the same level as Williams. Novak Djokovic was infamous for getting antsy on the court. He has been on the receiving end of boos after many times of breaking a racket. Similarly, Nick Kyrgios, dubbed the bad boy of tennis, is also someone who is at the center of controversy many times.

In the 2018 Australian Open, Kyrgios was fined after he had a fight with a fan. The Australian professional has had outbursts several times and has paid a whopping $550,000 in fines for antics on the court.
