As Gabriel Diallo prepares to face Tommy Paul in the third round of the US Open, the stakes are high, and playing against the local star, the Canadian player might be counting on a little bit of extra support—perhaps some lady luck from the stands. But who exactly is the special someone that could be fueling his motivation?
Diallo has shared a romantic relationship with Fiona Arrese Mata. Mata is a tennis player from Spain who also represented the University of Kentucky. While not much information is available about her professional career, her last match came in 2019, per WTA Tour.com. Playing at the ITF/TENNIS EUROPE, she lost to Nahia Berecoechea in straight sets. With a career-high ranking of 810, the last victory that Mata witnessed was in October 2018, when she defeated Queralt Carbo in Tunisia.
Diallo has been quite open about their relationship. Taking to his Instagram on June 6 this year, the Canadian player shared adorable pictures with his girlfriend, wishing her a happy birthday. The couple were seen enjoying an outing together and cherishing some drinks, as Diallo captioned the post, “Photo dump for the bday girl 👸 happy bday gangi 🤎🌝.”

While Diallo himself is emerging sensationally on the tennis courts and has advanced to the third round of the US Open, he is just like any other youngster off it. As per ATP Tour.com, Diallo’s favorite pastime is enjoying the beach and swimming, but he also likes to spend a lot of time with his girlfriend.
As the Canadian youngster is making a place for himself in the tennis arena with some crucial victories at one of the biggest stages, what’s worth noting is that he comes from an extremely humble background.

Gabriel Diallo is witnessing one of his best runs ever in a Grand Slam as he has reached the third round at the US Open. He is indeed happy with his performance, which was reflected in his post-match interview after he won the second round against Arthur Fils.
“I’ve been able to put up some good matches and continuously bring a very good level and give myself some chances to win,” he said. But there is something about him that might surprise many tennis enthusiasts. Diallo revealed the background of his father and said that his father’s village is not even visible on the map.

“My dad comes from a very small village, you can’t even see it on the map, actually,” Diallo said. “Me and him tried to go on a map and see it, and it doesn’t appear on the map. I’m not even kidding.” While Diallo did not reveal the name of the village, it’s well known that his father hails from Guinea, and his mother is from Ukraine.
It would be interesting to see if Diallo can achieve more success and outshine star players like Paul to advance further in the US Open. Getting to the third round is already a remarkable achievement for somebody coming from such a humble background, but his family and his girlfriend would be hoping for another favorable result, as the 22-year-old takes on Tommy Paul.
