Former World Number 1, Carlos Alcaraz, didn’t have a great ending to the 2023 season. After winning the Wimbledon title, much was expected of him. However, he failed to defend his US Open title and had a disappointing run in other tournaments. Further, even before the start of the current season, he received a major setback. It was about a concerning situation regarding his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero. However, Alcaraz has found a familiar face to back him Down Under.
Ferrero is a long-time coach of Alcaraz and is often present at the tournaments. However, he revealed that he’s not going to be with Alcaraz for the ongoing Australian Open due to problems with his knee.

Juan Carlos Ferrero had an arthroscopy on his left knee in December last year. Recovery from this surgery takes time and he will be on crutches for a few weeks. As a result, he announced that he’s not going to travel with Alcaraz at the Australian Open. Additionally, he isn’t going to come back any time soon, as his return is only expected to be in March at Indian Wells.
In Ferrero’s absence, Alcaraz is being coached by Samuel Lopez. Interestingly, Lopez had worked with Alcaraz last season as well when Ferrero was absent. Their partnership got off to a winning start as Alcaraz won the Queen’s Club title.
While Alcaraz has admitted that it is difficult not having Ferrero with him, Lopez has the full trust of the Spaniard. Talking about Lopez, Alcaraz said, “I have Sam with me, who is a great coach as well. He was the coach of Juan Carlos when he was playing. I trust him. I believe in him.”
Further reiterating his trust, Alcaraz added, “I think I can learn a lot from him. Let’s see how it is going to be. I trust him 100 per cent.” Although Ferrero announced his absence from the Spaniard’s team, he went on to pay a fitting tribute to Alcaraz.
