The 2021 Davis Cup Finals are almost over, and many fan-favorite teams have been exiting the tournament. Team Croatia has proceeded to the finals, behind the incredible performance of tournament MVP Borna Gojo.

With defending champion Spain’s exit last week, to Serbia bowing out, the Davis Cup finals have been nothing but surprising. It was an incredible display for the 23-year-old as he emerged victorious. He beat Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to give Croatia their 1-0 lead against Serbia.

Borna Gojo’s pro career graph

The Croatian debuted in the ATP at the age of 20 at the 2019 Winston-Salem Open. He had received a wildcard for the singles main draw. Subsequently, he went on to face American player Ryan Harrison. Sadly, Gojo lost his debut match 2-6, 4-6.

The right-handed player is from the town of Split in Croatia and has an impressive 6 ft 5-inch height.

Borna Gojo was a tennis player for Wake Forest University in Salem, North Carolina. Borna Gojo was selected for the Croatian team in the 2019 Davis Cup in his junior year. Subsequently, he skipped his senior year. Instead, he chose to focus on turning pro in 2020.

Following his impressive win in the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, the young Croatian star was announced the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Borna’s Impressive college years

This wasn’t Borna Gojo’s first time being the most-appreciated player in a tournament. As a member of the Wake Forest tennis team from 2017 to 2019, he made a name for himself. In 2018, he helped his university team, the Deacons, win their first-ever NCAA championship.

He had even advanced to the finals of the NCAA Singles Championship. However, he lost the final to his teammate Petros Chysochos 6-3, 6-3. Subsequently, Borna Gojo was named the Most Outstanding Player of the championship.

Gojo secured the First-Team All-ACC every single year at Wake Forest. Additionally, he was also a three-time NCAA Singles All-American.

Borna Gojo played all of his seventeen junior season matches as the top-seeded player. He finished his junior season with thirteen wins and only four losses. In fact, 11 of his 13 victories were against ranked opponents.

Gojo had begun making waves as far as back as his sophomore year. In his very first year as a Wake Forest Deacon, he defeated Portuguese player Nuno Borges, who was ranked No. 2 at the time. This was Gojo’s biggest ranked victory in his career then.

There is no doubt that Borna Gojo, following his performance in the Davis Cup, will be one of the players to watch out for in the coming years. With an assortment of accolades and honors under his belt already, the sky is the limit for the young Croatian.
