Born into a family deeply rooted in sports, Nava’s journey to professional tennis has been shaped by his upbringing. “I just wanted to play as a pro since I was a little kid,” Nava mentioned, reflecting on the childhood dreams that fueled his ambition. His parents, Xochitl and Eduardo, have a history as Olympic competitors in tennis and track, respectively. This set a high bar for athletic potential, which he’s currently presenting in Miami.

Besides them, the tennis star is also backed by brothers who were college tennis players and a cousin who reached No. 67 in the ATP Rankings. Despite facing tough competition from his siblings early on, Nava’s determination and skillset propelled him forward. “I always knew I was tall, athletic, and strong,” he shared, reflecting on his journey. Now, as he moves ahead to be visible in the spotlight with tournaments like the Delray Beach Open, and the Miami Open, it seems like great things await the young American.

Emilio Nava seeking consistency lessons from Carlos Alcaraz

Although the sporting legacy of his parents was enough to give him a head start in the world of tennis, there were several moments where Emilio Nava had to face the ups and downs of the sport. During the same interview, the 22-year-old mentioned how he looked at Indian Wells champion Carlos Alcaraz‘s journey to work on his inconsistency.

“I was always trying to just look at his practices when we would practice together. I think it was just his consistency, but consistency mentally. Mentally he was always just so positive and on a straight line or anything positive. He was never up and down. And he’s always just positive and consistent,” Emilio stated. As the tennis star is just hours away from a crucial match that will decide his continuation in the Miami Open, it still remains to be seen if he will be able to cope with it.
