Andre Agassi had a glorious career, spanning 21 years, that captured the hearts of millions. The eight-time grand slam champion brought to the court his dominant baseline game, which was solidified by his father when he was a toddler.

The player amassed great support during his career. Consequently, in 2006, when he retired after his final match in the third round of the US Open; the player broke down while bidding farewell to the sport he loved.

Agassi broke down during his final speech to his fans in 2006

Andre Agassi had lost his third-round match against Benjamin Becker at the US Open 2006. After that, he decided to give his farewell speech to his fans. However, the player could not get a hold of his emotions and spoke with tear-filled eyes.

He said, “The scoreboard says I lost today, but what the scoreboard doesn’t say is what it is I have found.” He continued, “Over the last 21 years, I have found loyalty; you have pulled through me on the court and also in life I found inspiration.”

Agassi talked about his fans who motivated him during tough times. He said, “You have willed me to succeed, sometimes even in my lowest moments. I found generosity.” He thanked his fans and said, “You have given me your shoulders to stand to reach for my dreams. Dreams I could have never reached without you.”

Conclusively, while breaking down, he showed his gratitude to his fans and said, “Over the last 21 years, I have found you and I would thank you and the memory of you with me for the rest of my life.”

Agassi made his debut in 1986 and swept the masses off their feat. He went on to win 60 career titles, including eight grand slam titles. Besides that, he also won one Olympic gold medal. Had it not been for his arch-rival Pete Sampras, the player would have added a few more major titles under his name.

He and Sampras met each other at five major finals. Out of these, Agassi won only one. Nonetheless, the glorious career of the player led him to become one of the few players to win a career grand slam. He married the former world no. 1 and 22-time grand slam champion, Steffi Graf, in 2001 and now lives a peaceful life while staying in touch with the sport.
