Australia’s number 3, Max Purcell got off to a winning start at Australian Open on Tuesday. But what made headlines was seeing him getting bewildered by the uniform of the security guards in the stands at Melbourne Park. Their outfit color, which was almost the same as that of the tennis ball, annoyed the Aussie.

He called those fluorescent yellow tops an unnecessary distraction in between the match. Purcell raised the grievance when he was asked if had any problem with the spectators moving around their seats before the change of ends.

Max Purcell was asked after the match about whether the chat he was having with the umpire was related to the crowd. To this, he replied, ‘No, a ball kid just took a drink bottle and started walking off the court during the point next to the net.

Then was it because of more people coming down the stairs? Purcell said, ‘That’s fine. I didn’t think it was an issue. The only thing that was annoying me was the security guards at the entrance wearing floral yellow. People were throwing up balls on serve. I’m like, What the fuck are you doing? I can’t see the ball. Any other color, please. As far as the people, it was fine.

Although it took four sets to decide the winner at the Kia Arena in Melbourne on Tuesday, the 25-year-old is more than ready to face his next opponent as he urges the fans to get behind Casper Ruud.

Max Purcell had dropped the first set in his first match and then made a comeback to defeat Hungary’s Mate Valkusz by 3-6,7-6(2),6-4,7-5. With this victory, he has now sealed his place in the second round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career. But he has no time to celebrate the victory as up next for the Aussie is former number 2, Casper Ruud. Although he had defeated Ruud last year at the Cincinnati Masters, the Norwegian would surely want to prove a point or two.

However, Purcell has a different plan this time. He said, “I just want to play in the middle of the day. Because any time you get to play Europeans in the Australian summer when they’ve come from indoor in winter, it’s a huge plus. The bigger the court, the more Australian fans I get cheering me on…I felt like I was using the crowd as well to make the guy I was playing feel a little smaller, a little defeated … they really get behind you.”
