The Laver Cup began in 2017 and has housed intense tennis action. Named after a legendary Australian player, the tournament houses talents from around the world and bids them against each other. Although the matches are played as usual, the format and structure of the tournament are unique, which makes it an event worth watching.
The Origin of Laver Cup
The tournament is named after former Australian player Rod Laver. He was a tennis player widely recognized as one of the best in the sport’s history. Laver is the only player to have achieved the Grand Slam, an achievement where a player wins all grand slams in the year. He has done so twice and has the only Grand Slam achievement in the Open Era.?

TEAM8,?Roger Federer’s?management company, headed the creation of the tournament. They collaborated with Brazilian businessman and former Davis Cup player Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia to develop the Laver Cup. Federer was inspired to develop a tennis team competition based on the annual Ryder Cup golf tournament, which pits the best golfers from the United States against the best players from Europe.

How the Laver Cup works
There are two teams in the tournament: Team World and Team Europe. Each team consists of six players and is led by a team captain who is a legend of the racket sport. Captain Bjorn Borg has led Team Europe, and Captain John McEnroe has led Team World since its conception in 2017. They reprise their role this year.

Three of the six members are determined by their ATP singles ranking on the Monday following the Wimbledon Championships. The remaining three are “captain’s picks” and are declared prior to the start of the US Open.
Laver Cup 2023 Format
The tournament consists of five sessions spread out across three days. Singles and doubles matches are players in the best of three sets with the usual ad scoring. If the first two sets are tied, the third set is a 10-point match tiebreaker. During the first two days, each player must play in at least one singles match. During the three days, no player may play singles more than twice. Doubles must be played by at least four of the six players.

The winning team must attain 13 points. If a tie remains after all 12 matches, a final overtime doubles match – a Decider – is played as a regular set with ad scoring and a tiebreak. Except for the Decider on Day 3, if points are 12:12, no doubles combination is allowed more than once.?

How many points do you need to win the 2023 Laver Cup?
The winning team needs to win 13 points to win the championship. On the first day, all wins are worth one point; then on the second day, all wins are worth two points. On the last day, each point is worth three points. 24 points are available, and a team must reach 13 points to win the event.?

Since 2017, the tournament has settled into its own as a tournament that shows a great format of team tennis. This year will be no different.
