Roger Federer has established his name as one of the tennis greats. Many would chalk his success up to talent since he was a proficient player when he was young. However, people seldom focus on the hard work players like Federer put in. Without discipline and smarts, talent won’t work. Mark Petchey, former coach of Andy Murray, talked about a practice session of Federer in which the Swiss had absolute focus. While Federer is calm and collected most of the time, he has moments where he gets angry as well.

In 2018, Mark Petchey witnessed a Federer’s practice session in Dubai. The British coach was working alongside Greek player Maria Sakkari and her coach. While he was involved in her practice, he also sat in some practice sessions of Federer with Corentin Moutet and another player. According to him, he was speechless after the event.

Petchey explained what he saw during the training. He elaborated that there were several jokes shared between the three. But when the ball was in play, it was complete attention to detail and the joking time was over. “There were a couple of laughs here and there, but boy when the ball was in play, it was absolutely 100 percent attention to detail, no messing around,” Petchey said.

Petchey recalled seeing the practice partners performing badly at one point. He added that they weren’t joking, but genuinely had trouble playing. Federer gave the two a proper lecture, as he didn’t feel amused. “I remember at one stage, Moutet and the other French guy started hitting the ball badly. They weren’t messing around, but they just got tight or whatever. Roger went f***ing nuts.

Petchey further said, “He gave them a proper lecture. In a good way, I mean, it certainly sorted them out, and they got motivated and they came out, they hit the ball great. Every serve was with a purpose. It wasn’t to serve for the sake of 200 serves, it was maybe 50 serves, but every single one was tight to the line.
