The Spaniard entered the competition with a pristine Grand Slam record this year and was going for a record-extending 23rd title. Frances Tiafoe eventually put an end to his quest in the fourth round by defeating him with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Rafael Nadal takes the onus on himself
Post the conclusion of the match, the Spaniard addressed the media and spoke to NY Times regarding how his injuries aren’t the only reasons for his hampered preparations. “Of course, this was not the ideal preparation for me. He further went on to state, “We can’t find excuses. We need to be enough critic with myself. That’s the only way to improve or that’s the only way that I understand that you are able to find solutions.“

But Nadal, in typical fashion, showed grit and tenacity to come back from the injury and battle till the last 16 in Flushing Meadows.
