The cliche “Rome wasn’t built in a day” perfectly describes the stellar journey of the ATP legend, Novak Djokovic who overcame various challenges in competitive tennis. It was all  Roger FedererRafael Nadal‘s dominance between 2003-2010 when the Serbian tennis player was considered as just another player in the top 5 of the men’s circuit.

During that phase, the 36-year-old player was also struggling to win a major and achieve his goal of becoming the number one player in the ATP circuit. There were further a lot of doubtful moments and concerns looming over him as he also considered bidding adieu to the sport. However, the subsequent events became one of the biggest turning points in his professional journey according to the recent revelation by the currently ranked world No. 1 player.

In an interview with Novak Books, the reigning French Open champion surprised everyone by revealing that he once considered ‘leaving’ competitive tennis. He said, “Let’s say 2010 was one point where I was talking about it I think people follow me and follow tennis that I was thinking about leaving tennis at that point. You know, struggling to really break through and win more slams and break the dominance of Nadal and Federer.”

During that period, the 36-year-old tennis legend was ranked no 3 on the ATP Tour, but, it just wasn’t enough for him as he wanted to win the grass-court major, Wimbledon, and become number one. However, the subsequent tournaments, specially, the Davis Cup 2010 helped the Serb to build confidence and enhance his game style and technique.

He added, “I think Davis Cup, 2010,  which was one of the most important wins I ever had in my career. And that because it just it gave me so much energy and motivation and really wings for what was coming up after that. And that was arguably the best season I ever had. And, you know, going on the streak for six months without losing a match. It was incredible. So that was one of the biggest turning points ever had.”

In the midst of the free-flowing conversation, Djokovic also talked about another pivotal year in his tennis career.

During the conversation about his upcoming book, the French Open champion mentioned the 2018 season in which he managed to make a roaring comeback after his elbow surgery. Due to his injury, Djokovic missed out on a number of crucial tournaments and he also dropped out of the top 20 rankings in the men’s circuit.

However, despite those setbacks, the Serb made an incredible comeback with his sheer determination and he later clinched two major titles. That return to the court also became another major turning point in his journey as he won the Wimbledon championships and the US Open in that season.
