Today, players and fans are eagerly waiting for the US Open draw, as the tournament is getting closer. Meanwhile, before the draw, 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic announces his withdrawal from the tournament.

There were a lot of speculations regarding Djokovic’s participation in this year’s US Open, as the US government lifted some of the restrictions regarding the COVID-19 vaccination. Many fans believed that Djokovic would enter the draw at the last minute. However, he himself took to social media and announced his decision.

Novak Djokovic 0fficially withdraws from the US Open 2022

Earlier, the Serbian tennis star took to Twitter and wrote, Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open. Thank you #NoleFam for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again. See you soon tennis world!

As per his tweet, Djokovic is looking forward to the next part of the season, as he is keeping himself in good shape. Moreover, he thanked his fans for all the support. Notably, many fans signed a petition to let Djokovic play in this year’s US Open. However, it all went in vain. Safe to say, the Serb did not want to face the same scenario as the Australian Open earlier; so, he had to make this decision.

Additionally, many former and current players, including John McEnroe, John Isner, Reilly Opelka, and others, talked in favor of the Serbian and wanted the former world No.1 to play at this year’s Open. Because of the US government’s vaccination rules, Djokovic is unable to enter the country, as he decided to not take the vaccine.

What’s next for Djokovic?

Currently, the 21-time Grand Slam winner is looking forward to the Laver Cup, which will take place on 23rd September. Earlier, he posted about playing in this prestigious tournament, as he showed some genuine excitement.

We will also see the Big Four reunite for Team Europe, as Djokovic, Federer, Murray, and Nadal will play for the first time together in this year’s Laver Cup. It is also worth noting that Djokovic has not won a match at Laver Cup. Whereas, Team Europe won all the editions so far.

Apart from Laver Cup, Djokovic currently doesn’t have any other tournament on his schedule. Notably, many countries are still not allowing unvaccinated players to enter. So, it will be hard for the Serb to play in as many tournaments as possible.
