Nick Kyrgios is often counted synonymously with controversies. Over the years, the Australian star has indulged in numerous on-court activities that have landed him in trouble. A glimpse of the same was visible today, during his quarterfinal clash with Frances Tiafoe at the Citi Open.

Despite being in devastating form, the 2022 Wimbledon Championships runner-up faced a tough challenge while facing the American favorite. While the fans enjoyed a thrilling battle between the two, things soon turned ugly, with Tiafoe fuming over Kyrgios’ actions. Reportedly, the 10th seeded Tiafoe called out Kyrgios for distracting him during his serve.

Suffering a first set loss, Kyrgios made a strong comeback in the second set, forcing Tiafoe to push his limits. With both players playing some jaw dropping tennis, a fan distraction sparked tensions between the two stars. With Kyrgios on serve, a fan reportedly yelled at him. In reply to which, the already agitated Australian took no time to reply in typical Kyrgios fashion.

Going ahead in the game, it was Tiafoe who was serving. However, despite being on the receiving end, Kyrgios didn’t seem to stop bashing the fan. With the set in the tie-breaker, it was Tiafoe who led the race with five match points. However, failing to cope up with the distraction from Kyrgios’ end, Tiafoe failed to convert the opportunities, resulting in him losing the set to the 27-year-old Australian. Disappointed by the situation, Tiafoe finally came out blasting the umpire about Kyrgios’ distraction.

With the high-tension drama unfolding one after the other, Kyrgios and Tiafoe used the changeovers to compose themselves as the two headed for the third set. Getting over the drama, the two made their best attempts to gain back the momentum to head towards victory.

Kyrgios outplays Tiafoe for a place in the final 4

Sailing over their opponents in the previous rounds, the two entered the quarterfinals with utmost confidence. Playing some high-quality tennis, the two made sure to leave no stone unturned to win. With their best game in place, the two took the first set into a tie-breaker, with Tiafoe dominating it.

Kyrgios, however, made a strong comeback in the drama-filled second set, winning the set in another tie breaker. Even though the two started on a strong note in the decider, it was Kyrgios who rose to the occasion, winning the 2-hour 29-minutes marathon 6-7, 7-6, 6-2. Kyrgios will now face Mikael Ymer for a place in the last 2.
