World no.2 Daniil Medvedev, who decided to start his 2022 campaign at the ATP Cup, faced a tough opening round opponent in Frenchman Ugo Humbert. Humbert is one of the few players to have a positive head-to-head record against the Russian.

As anticipated, the match turned out to be a riveting watch with both players refusing to give up control in the first set. Medvedev fought back in the tie-breaker after being down 1-4 and thanks to Humbert’s double-fault, the Russian narrowly closed the first set.

But, Humbert was relentless and is pushing Medvedev to bring out his best level every single game in the second set. Take a look at the following rally for instance. After a few baseline exchanges, Humbert decided to advance to the net and intended to close out the rally with a volley but Medvedev had other plans as always.

The Russian hit an unbelievable forehand passing shot with spin as it landed right on top of the line, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Another example to prove that this contest between Humbert and Medvedev came out in the first set. Both the players were engaged in baseline exchange once again Humbert was trying to bring in variation to confuse Medvedev but the latter remained too good to be deceived.

When the Frenchman hit a drop shot that didn’t land on a perfect spot, the world no.2 was quick enough to reach the ball and hit a backhand cross-court winner to seal the point.
