Teenage sensation Holger Rune has caused the biggest upset of the men’s draw so far after overcoming world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. He now becomes the first Dane to have made into the last 8 of a Slam since 1967.

Tsitsipas, who lost in last year’s final in Paris, looked far from his best as the 19-year-old Rune capitalized on the Greek’s poor day. Rune, who won his maiden ATP Tour title in Munich last month, continues his impressive streak this season.

Mother gets emotional after Holger Rune pays tribute to his team at French Open

The Dane struggled to close the match out in the fourth set, only succeeding in his second attempt. After the victory, Holger Rune was asked about the victory’s meaning. He replied, “I get so emotional talking about family and coaches. We’re still in the quarterfinals, we didn’t win the tournament yet.”

“My mom, my whole team up there is why I’m here today. Without them would not be possible, and I’m so grateful to have such a great team helping me in the tough situation and good situation. So, I’m so grateful,” he added.

His parents, Andres Nodskov Pedersen and Aneke Rune, were in the stands to see their son reach his first-ever Grand Slam quarter-finals. He will now face 8th seed Casper Ruud on Wednesday.

Tsitsipas’ struggles against Rune’s attacking game plan

Rune produced a consistent display in the first set, but Tsitsipas hit back to equalize by claiming the second set. However, the World No. 40 kept his nerve to earn crucial breaks in the third and fourth set to take the game away.

With a serving percentage of 83, Rune dug himself out of tight situations throughout the game. Tsitsipas struggled as the game went on. Rune then took a commanding 5-2 lead in the fourth set, but the Greek hit back to reduce the gap.
