In 2017, Carlos Moya took over as the coach of Rafael Nadal. Nadal has won 22 titles, (including Grand Slams), under his direction so far. Nadal was able to recover the top spot in the ATP rankings, thanks in part to Moya’s unwavering backing. Carlos not only works as Nadal’s coach but also as the tennis director at his Spanish academy.

The two Spaniards are warm friends with one another. Back in 2011, Rafael Nadal published his autobiography, “Rafa: My Story.” In Nadal’s memoir, Carlos Moya, Rafael Nadal’s coach, recalls his first encounter with the Spanish player.

Moya describes the first encounter with young Rafael Nadal

During their first meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, Carlos Moy? was playing in an ATP tournament and was the best in the world in his category. And on the other hand, Nadal was a junior one.

In the book, Moya recalled their first meeting. He said, ” Now, to be honest, he did not strike me as being singularly more gifted than other players of his age. I did see he was very combative, though what was more surprising was how incredibly shy he also was.?

Further, he added about Nadal?s shyness and how he might have underestimated him. He said, ?We met and shook hands, but he didn’t even look at me and uttered barely a syllable. It’s true he was probably a bit overawed since I’d made a bit of a splash in the media after making it unseeded to the Australian Open final earlier that year. But the contrast was still Striking?shocking, actually between the timid little boy off court and the super-competitive kid on it, even though we were just lying, not even playing points.?

Nadal, the Spanish tennis legend, has been outstanding this year. The 36-year-old won the year’s first two Grand Slam championships. Additionally, the 22-time Grand Slam winner advanced to the Wimbledon Championships 2022 Semifinal. However, a misfortune injury caused him to pull back from the competition.

After missing a few weeks of the tour, the Spaniard made a comeback at the Cincinnati Masters competition. However, he was shockingly defeated by Borna Coric, who eventually won the title.
