Nick Kyrgios' quick wit strikes again! Is he the most entertaining player in tennis right now?

Australian ATP star Nick Kyrgios is back to controversies again. While he hasn’t held the racquet this season, his skills with the mike are bringing him under the spotlight. Kyrgios has shifted from playing to commentating in the US Open, but his attitude hasn’t changed much. While responding to a tennis fan’s comment, he makes a sarcastic entry showing that it is impossible to change the Aussie player.

Nick Kyrgios recently shut down a tennis fan after she made a controversial remark against him. The ATP star has returned to the courts of Flushing Meadows, but this time not as a participant—he’s serving as ESPN’s commentator for the ongoing Slam. Kyrgios has been sidelined from tournaments due to an innovative surgery to repair a wrist sprain. The injury originally occurred during a 2015 match against Dimitrov at Indian Wells. Though Kyrgios continued to play for the next seven years, his last hitting session at Wimbledon aggravated the injury, forcing him to step away from playing and take up commentary for now. Known for speaking his mind, Kyrgios has already attracted significant criticism with his outspoken commentary.

While Ben Stellar stepped forward for Kyrgios, a tennis fan took a dig at him. “There is any player that likes Kyrgios? 😂😂😂 All of them laugh when he enter in the court #usopen,” she tweeted. This comment didn’t miss Kyrgios’ notice and he quickly responded with his tweet. “Because we have the best memories together- they also feel comfortable and know I like to have a good time 🤷🏽‍♂️😂” tweeted Kyrgios. While the ATP star responded by maintaining his usual sarcastic personality, it was well understood that he didn’t like the comment.

This is not the first time, Kyrgios shut down a tennis fan for their negative comment about the player’s commentary. A few days back, a tennis fan tweeted criticizing Kyrgios’ and mentioned that he has “no diction, no gumption, no projection, no energy.” That person even called it a “regular pedestrian commentary.” However, the Aussie player said, “I’m courtside you numbnuts, I can’t be as loud as I wanna be.”

Despite the backlash his remarks have caused, Kyrgios remains firm in his views. During Ben Shelton’s opening-round match against Dominic Thiem at the ongoing US Open, Kyrgios made a comment that was not only controversial but also unnecessary for that context. Yet, he chose to speak his mind, demonstrating his commitment to transparency within the tennis community.

Nick Kyrgios sticks to his point despite criticisms about his commentary

When Kyrgios was commentating for ESPN at Shelton’s match against Thiem, he commented on Jannik Sinner. This ATP star said he doesn’t plan to be as “hospitable” to the Italian as before in the locker room. Here, Kyrgios referred to Sinner’s failure in two doping tests because of Clostebol, a banned substance that entered his body from a spray that his physiotherapist used. While Sinner suffered a short suspension from ITIA and withdrawal of his prize money from Indian Wells, Kyrgios wasn’t satisfied.

The Aussie star’s comment displeased tennis fans, who felt it was unnecessary. Some even shared a clip of Kyrgios’ heated argument with the chair umpire during the 2022 Miami Open, where he smashed his racquet on the court and received a rare game penalty for his misconduct.

While there is much criticism, Nick Kyrgios remains firm in his attitude. He aims to maintain his transparent self and speak his mind. While his comments have brought criticisms, such controversies helped make the Grand Slam more popular and celebrated among tennis fans.
