Jannik Sinner had no option but to make a major decision before the US Open. This Italian ATP star faced an unexpected incident in March that shook the tennis world. While Sinner’s team came forward explaining how the Italian had no part in it, he was anxious enough to take a step that he never thought of. Sinner’s decision is shrouded in sheer mystery, which hints at his struggles behind the calm attitude. As he proceeds towards the American Grand Slam, everyone is left intrigued: Can Sinner keep up with his form after his latest decision?

Sinner was positive for Clostebol, an anabolic androgenic steroid easily found in over-the-counter medicines in Italy. His blood contained 121 picograms per ml (pg/ml) and 122 pg/ml Clostebol in two drug tests. Despite failures in two drug tests, Sinner was allowed to play in the Miami Open and Indian Wells.

However, a question arises about how this banned substance reached Sinner’s blood. The Italian’s coach told ESPN that it transmitted through Naldi’s hands who used a spray with Clostebol and then messaged Sinner with bare hands. Ferrera advised Naldi to use it when the latter cut his finger. Had they been conscious of the incident, Sinner might not gone through this unfortunate ordeal.

Following the reveal, Sinner decided to part ways with his fitness coach. In a pre-tournament press conference, when asked whether he parted ways with his fitness coach Umberto Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi, Sinner responded with a “yeah“. While he mentioned how “they have been a huge part “ of his career and that they did “an incredible job, bringing a lot of success“, Sinner felt discomfort working with them after he failed in anti-doping tests twice. “Now, because of these mistakes, I’m not feeling that confident to continue with them. The only thing I just need right now, just some clean air,” said the ATP no 1.

However, the incident left him scarred, given his intense dedication to the sport. Sinner was also briefly suspended, but he appealed, and an independent tribunal ruled him with “no fault or negligence.
