Do you remember the last time Novak Djokovic went without winning a Grand Slam title in a year after playing the full season? Well, you would have to rewind to 2010. It was one of the rare occasions when Djokovic played all four major tournaments in a year but failed to win any of them. He came close to winning the US Open title but lost against Roger Federer in the summit clash. Now, the ongoing season presents a similar scenario for the Serb. However, with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner struggling, Djokovic can avoid this embarrassing 14-year-old record.

After playing the three Grand Slam tournaments this year, Djokovic is yet to win a major title in 2024. He reached the finals of the Wimbledon Championships but went down fighting against Alcaraz. The US Open presents Djokovic one final opportunity to put his hands on a major trophy this season and he has a big advantage going into the final Grand Slam event of the year.

After Alcaraz’s Wimbledon victory, he has struggled with an inconsistent run of form. While he lost against Djokovic in the Paris Olympics final, the Spaniard suffered a shock defeat against Gael Monfils in the second round of the ongoing Cincinnati Masters. On the other hand, Sinner isn’t in the best physical shape lately. He missed the Olympics due to illness and went down fighting in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open.

On the contrary, positive visuals emerged from Djokovic’s practice session earlier today. He was seen practicing for the first time without a knee cap since his injury at the French Open. After he underwent surgery on his knee, Djokovic was spotted playing in the matches with a knee cap to avoid strain on his knee. However, it looks like the Serb has recovered completely and it will be a big advantage for him going into the US Open.

After sustaining a knee injury in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, Djokovic was uncertain to play at the Wimbledon Championships. However, the Serb recovered well after undergoing the surgery and reached the finals at Wimbledon, playing with a kneecap throughout the tournament. Despite not being 100% fit, the 24-time Grand Slam champion proved his critics wrong with brilliant performances on the grass court.

Speaking to Tennis Channel during an interview at the tournament, Djokovic talked about his recovery and stated, “Right at the top, maybe two or three, in terms of the time required for me to come back to the desired level. I decided along with my team members to go to have an arthroscopic intervention literally a day or two days after that match. The reason why is that I was advising myself with all the orthopedic doctors around the world that I know, and my team knows, and they all said the same thing.”

Eventually, the surgery worked in the Serb’s favor and since then, he has gone on to win the Olympic gold medal apart from his Wimbledon exploits. What do you think about Djokovic’s chances in the US Open? Let us know in the comments below.
