Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have been two of the most prominent figures in tennis. After bagging 20 grand slams, the Swiss international decided to hang his boots after an impressive career that lasted for more than 20 years. On the contrary, the Spanish great is still going strong while planning to hang his boots next year. As their illustrious careers have unfolded on the courts of Wimbledon and Roland Garros, they’ve not only displayed extraordinary skills but also offered glimpses into their different personalities.
Recently, both the players gave their opinion on their life post-retirement and if they would be open to a coaching role. However, what shocked many was their diversified opinions.
Rafael Nadal wishes to stay connected with the sport post-retirement
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have always been celebrated not only for their on-court prowess but also for their distinctive perspectives on the sport. This divergence in viewpoints is perhaps most apparent when considering their post-retirement plans, specifically in relation to coaching.
Rafael Nadal, known for his dedication to tennis, has expressed a willingness to step into the coaching world once his playing days are behind him. He acknowledges that while it might not consume the bulk of his life, coaching for a few weeks with someone is a possibility. Coming from a background deeply rooted in sports, Nadal recognizes that sports will forever be intertwined with his existence. “Why not? I don’t know, but I know it won’t be the bulk of my life. Maybe a few weeks with someone, why not… I come from tennis, sports in general and I know that sport will always be a part of my life,” said Nadal as he opened up about his coaching desires once his illustrious career takes hold.
However, one of his most fierce rivals on the courts, Roger Federer offers a completely different perspective on the same. While Rafa plans to stay connected to the sport, Roger issues other plans that he has.
Roger Federer offers contrasting views on coaching as compared to Rafa
Roger Federer, as compared to Rafael Nadal, takes a more reserved stance. He adopts a “never say never” attitude, stating that unexpected opportunities can arise, just as they did when he persuaded Stefan Edberg to coach him. However, with a happy family life and a lot of commitments, Federer currently does not see coaching as an option. However, as he remains open to providing support and guidance to junior players, his focus is clearly on his family and other things in his life.
“Coaching… I mean, never say never. Stefan Edberg said the same, he would never coach until he got the phone call from me. I invited him over for practice and he said ‘OK, let me try for a year’. At the moment with my four children going to school and everything going on, I don’t see myself coaching at the moment. If a junior comes around and he needs some support or advice I’m happy to do that,” says Roger Federer.
Thus, when it comes to life post-tennis, both players have offered different views. While one remains to stay connected to the sport by offering valuable insights to aspiring talents, one offers a completely different view. However, it is only time that will reveal what happens to the decisions that the sporting greats make.
