The entire tennis realm was recently taken aback by the epic 2023 US Open encounter between Alexander Zverev and  Jannik Sinner. During the thrilling five-setter on the hard court, the ATP stars stunned the audience with their tenacity and gritty display of the game. It was the German tennis star who prevailed in the longest match of this season’s hard court major tournament, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

The sixth-seed Italian, on the other hand, was devasted as his phenomenal run came to an end despite making remarkable efforts in New York. And after his heartbreaking defeat, the 22-year-old player’s distraught reactions were quite evident when he left the stadium in agony.

The Italian tennis star entered the US Open as the sixth seed and was being viewed as one of the favorites to win the title alongside  Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. Justifying all the hype and expectations, Sinner outclassed some of the big guns including Stan Wawrinka and Lorenzo Sonego in order to reach the round of 16.

Despite his stellar run in New York, the 22-year-old has now been knocked out of the tournament after his recent epic clash against Zverev. Consequently, after losing a 4-hour and 41-minute-long intense battle, Sinner couldn’t contain his tears as he left the stadium in distraught.

It came to the public lens after the official Twitter page of The Tennis Letter shared a video clip of the heartbreaking incident at the US Open. They added a caption, “Jannik Sinner leaves the stadium & Zverev applauds him as he walks off. The crowd is screaming for him. Jannik’s face is in his hands. The most heartbreaking sport in the world. Give it up for this young man. 🥹”

 

This is not the first time that the Italian is facing a heartbreaking defeat at a Grand Slam event.

Sinner previously came close to clinching his first major title

Even during the grass court season, the 22-year-old player was in stellar form as he reached the semifinal round of the Wimbledon. During his phenomenal campaign in London, Sinner outperformed some of the top players including the likes of Diego Schwartzman and Roman Safiullin as he aimed for a Grand Slam glory.

However, the Italian was then given the most challenging task of facing the Serbian tennis legend, Novak Djokovic in the semis. After a three-set battle on his ‘favorite’ grass surface, the current world No. 2  managed to clinch a comfortable win against his young rival.
