The coaching saga surrounding Danish player Holger Rune is picking up pace. After a disappointing US Open that saw him face an early elimination in the first round, questions were asked regarding his performances. However, in a recent revelation, Holger’s mother, Aneke Rune, has shed light on the ongoing issues while citing some major concerns about her son’s coaching staff.

Holger, who is currently coached by Lars Christensen, had Serena Williams‘ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou as his coach as well. However, after making a smooth start, things did not turn out well for them.

In a recent interview, Holger Rune’s mother delved into the dynamics of her son’s coaching team, underscoring its pivotal role in his continuous success. The contrast between the team’s effective success at the end of 2022 and the challenges faced during the Australian Open stint has ignited discussions regarding potential clashes of ego within the coaching ranks.

While the autonomy to curate his team lies with Holger, Rune’s mother firmly emphasized an important point. The unwavering realization of their objectives was tied intrinsically to the cohesive coaching unit they had painstakingly cultivated.

The departure of Patrick Mouratoglou has triggered speculation that differences with the current head coach, Lars Christensen, might have been a contributing factor. The disruptions in the coaching setup invariably cast a shadow on Holger, who ends up shouldering the brunt of the repercussions.

“It’s a bit strange. The team that worked at the end of the year (2022, ed.) suddenly didn’t work in Australia. There were ego clashes between the coaches. The team that worked in the gravel season suddenly doesn’t work now. Ego clash again? I don’t know,” said Aneke Rune to Ekstra Bladet.

Thus, her words shed light on one of the most astonishing developments regarding Holger Rune’s coaching staff. With an early elimination in the first round, he would not end the year on a good note after failing to impress at any grand slam this year.

Rune’s performance under different coaches

Rune has failed to stand up to the expectations this year after a series of disappointments. Given the stature and the immense potential that he holds, all eyes were on him going into the US Open. However, a first-round elimination is what he had to settle with.

Earlier, at Wimbledon, he made it to the quarter-finals before losing out to the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. At that time, he was mentored by his current coach, Lars. At the French Open, Patrick took the charge. In Paris, he again managed to bag a quarter-final appearance before losing out to Casper Ruud.

The Australian Open was also not up to the mark for him as a fourth-round elimination saw him make his way out of the tournament. However, at that time, both Lars and Patrick were on the coaching staff for Holger.
