The 20-year-old Danish prodigy, Holger Rune had a stellar season last year. He won his first Masters 1000 title at Paris Masters in 2022. Shouldering high expectations, he has been through a rollercoaster ride this year as he failed to get consistency throughout. But the late addition of 56-year-old German legend, Boris Becker to his team has added a new dimension to his performance. Jimmy Connors and his son had earlier praised the inclusion of the 6 Grand Slam title holder in Rune’s team.

Rune is currently placed at number 8 in the men’s singles ranking. He went through a rough patch after making it to the QFs of the Wimbledon Championships earlier this year. The Danish had managed to win just 1 out of his 8 matches after that before making a ‘comeback from almost nowhere’ with the help of Becker at Swiss Indoors. The coach who himself is a legend is known for his stint with Novak Djokovic.
Brett Connors said, “He’s got a master’s 1000 hasn’t made a semi-final at a slam, I think that’s probably coming in 24. I think him working with Boris is a really good mix. I know, some people thought the styles might be different, but I don’t think it’s the tennis styles matching that need to be you know, that need to be similar. It’s more the off-court stuff, the personality stuff, all the little intricacies of a game and a match.”
Elaborating on the preparation for a game, he continued, “Yeah, mental how you want to set up your season and schedule and how you want to, you know, maintain your body and get, you know, get it worked on and make sure you eat right. And all that stuff. I think I think Boris is gonna help him a lot. And I think Holger Rune is going to have a breakthrough breakthrough year in 24.”
Since the addition of Boris Becker, Rune has reached the semis in Basel and also made it to the QFs of Paris Masters. His sudden boom at the later stages of the year secured him a place at the ATP Finals for the first time in his career. Now, he has already decided to extend his partnership with the German until the 2024 season. So, he’s surely going to be the one to watch out for next year.
Holger Rune is now quite confident to kick off the 2024 season
Rune had earlier revealed how Becker helped him to get out of a ‘negative spiral.’ His recent performance has even caught the attention of Becker’s former student, Novak Djokovic. The current number one also praised the Dane, saying he has enormous potential to achieve success at the highest level. Djokovic even highlighted that Boris Becker will help him improve his game overall.
